    Default Two cherries

    Hi all!

I was wondering how you like your two cherries chisels. I have heard some mixed opinions about them, some say that they have big milling marks when unpolished, when polished the edges are rounded... How where your chisels?

I also had some questions about the bench chisels, are the sides of the chisels made in such a way that you can get into tight corners like in a dovetail. I can’t seem to find a picture that shows the sides of the chisel.

The mortise chisels are they 90 degrees from side to side; I have had some chisels that were faaaaaaaaaar off.

Looking forward to seeing you point of view on these chisels!

    Best regards from Norway

    Hi Andreas,
I have the bevel edged polished set. They are way more polished than I was expecting. Need dark glasses to take em out of the box. Makes my other old chisels look shabby. The polishing has rounded the corners a bit but at my level of woodwork I have not had any problem with that. They do take a good edge and keep it reasonably well too. I would say they are reasonable value for money. Had I known back then I would have got the unpolished ones however. As for milling marks I could live with that as long as the back is flatish to start with. The polished ones were sharpish out of the box and only took about 1 min each to flatten the backs on the oil stone. I dont know what the 2 cherries mortice chisels are like.
A few good reviews on Narex chisels prompted me to get a set of mortice chisels. I have so far only tried a few test mortices in quite hard wood and they do the job ok. Very reasonable price too.

I think they would be at least as good as the 2 cherries.

I had a few TC chisels over the years. They were all made of good steel, and could take & hold a very good edge. Unlike Orraloon, though, I found the rounding of the corners from polishing to be a big nuisance. A chisel that is not sharp corner to corner is useless for mny jobs, and it takes a great deal of sweat to re-flatten them.

The duffed corners can be fixed relatively simply - just a lot of lapping, however, the crudely-ground bevels on mine were another matter. They may have improved in recent years, but mine had very small (and uneven) bevels, leaving fat 'shoulders' that bruise the corners of dovetails. I also think they make the blades of the smaller sizes too long, which makes them a bit too 'springy' when struck. That problem diminishes as they wear down, of course.

Can't you find a nice set of old Bergs? I would have thought they would be lying around everywhere in your part of the world!

    Cheers,
    IW

    Hi thanks for the replies!
I haven’t seen any Berg chisels... ever. If there are a lot of them they must be in Sweden. I have seen a lot of Kongsberg chisels but never berg unfortunately I would love a set of bergs.

Guess I will have to see the chisels in the shop, test the backside and look at how the bevels are made, if they are too high I guess i will have to get some Japanese ones (will blow my budget but what the hell). The Narex chisels look nice but i will have a 35% tax increase+ the cost of transportation if I order outside of Norway. I'm making a trip to Germany in 2 weeks so then ill bypass the 35%tax and transport cost. But I'm forced to choose among dieter schimds tools, that’s why I’m so hyped to get the two cherries.

Hi Andreas, if you buy at Dieter Schmid, buy the unpolished Two Cherries. He ordered them from TC because many members of the german forum wanted that steel quality but not the polish. Cheers Pedder TWO CHERRIES Chisels
