I very much doubt a chip that small could cause any issues; I can’t think of any circumstances where you could induce chatter from the blade being unsupported just in that corner.

I agree. I doubt it will affect anything.

I'd be a little more concerned about the paint on the machined face (and any other machined surfaces).

I see a very faint smudge. What does that mean? It has been repainted?

Here are a few other pics of the plane. Maybe something stands out to you that didn't stand out to me. I could see that the paint has chipped. Don't know if that's the original japanning. The owner has clearly tried to flatten the sole to no avail. Also the tote is interesting - "J Briggs"?

On the note of paint on machined faces, here's another one of my planes. I think cordovan planes are a thing, but is this just sprayed over? Why would anyone do this? Should I strip it bare and start over?

Bedrock planes were never painted blue - always black japan. So your plane has been repainted (a very nice colour to a Record plane fancier). Being repainted is not a problem, but make sure you clean off any paint on the machined surfaces. The name on the handle will most likely be that of a previous owner. It's part of the history of your plane, dont sand it off.

As for the red plane... who does that? At least it's kept rust at bay. Yes, strip the red paint off and start over.

Thanks! Kinda relieved the blue paint is not original - I would've had no idea how to restore it. Also a bit disappointed it's not original, but doesn't matter too much - I will be using it rather than flipping it.
