Yes that symbol is similar to the Berg Shark.
    I don't think it's a Berg for a couple of reasons.
Firstly E A Bergs that I have seen always have the name and the logo and not the logo alone.
Secondly Berg chisels were usually branded on the back. Not sure about the gouges, but I think that they may also have been back branded.
Finally, the symbol is different in shape and details from a Berg shark symbol.
I'm not sure what it is.
Sandvik used a fish symbol but not that one.
How does it sharpen and cut?
Looks like a handy gouge nonetheless.
    Cheers

    Hi Jan.

    I'm gonna say Berg too.

SG, the Berg logo changed quite a lot and often, before they landed on the common logo that Bacho took over. This I believe is an early one.

About the gouges, all I can say is that I have five, and they are all marked on the front/inside. Only one are with the full name. The others just with a shark followed by "sweden". This one I believe is from a time before they started doing that.

It's a very nice gouge Jan.

    Thanks Thomas,

that pretty much asnwers my question,

I was wondering, can you say anything about the quality of the old and newer Berg tools?

The saying is that the older ones are better. They were hand forged whereas later ones were machine made. I haven't really worked that much with them to be able to tell a difference, but have so far never been disappointed with any Berg. Unfortunately I have a bad habbit of thrashing the edge before it reach its limit. At the moment I'm sharpening some of the red plastic handled ones to be my set of thrashers, as they aren't the prettiest things anyway.

Maybe someone else can tell you more.
