Default A chisel ID, fairly old I guess.

Anyone got any clues to age or other info on this mortice chisel?

It's been fairly unloved, but it looks old. The socket has a definite seam as if it was folded around. Unfortuneately someone pounded it without a handle in it. There'll have to be a bit of cleaning up there.

On the side in the photo (but up-side-down, sorry) is "UNICORN" above "MADE IN SHEFFIELD".
On the other side is "Wm RIDGWAY" above "SHEFFIELD". The little"m" is in superscript with a squiggle underneath. ie the old abbreviation for William which I think dropped out of use around 1910-20.

The chisel is slightly wider than 3/8" (ie 10.6mm) at the tip but it tapers very slightly back to the socket. It's about 10mm wide near the root of the blade.

PS. I know William Ridgway as a company existed making tools up until fairly recently (ie 70s) but I think this is much earlier than that (or at least I am wishfully thinking it is so).
