Default Chisel Paring - 6 steels

I have completed the second part of the chisel steel testing. This involves the durability of 6 steels when paring. The link below is to my website:

I have also posted the first assessment, for reference. This dealt with the behaviour of 5 steels used to chop dovetails:

    Looking forward to the discussion.

    Regards from Perth

I havn't been up to posting but this is enough to prompt it, great stuff Derek. It adds a lot to the discussion and will help inform my chisel purchasing.

    Hi All,

So now that you've completed the initial testing will you try and get these chisels re-heat treasted at a higher temperature, is that even possible?

    Great article as always.

    Thanks Simon.

I would love to have the steel rehardened, but that is not feasible (at this stage).

    Hi Derek,

Thanks for another excellent comparison, I've been following with interest, and while I don't have anything much to add directly to the discussion, it would be interesting to record the hardness of each of the steels. While I have a newly acquired rockwell hardness tester, and would be happy to do it, I'm a long way from Perth, do you have anyone locally that could do it.

I'm pretty sure BobL has access to a rockwell hardness tester where he works, maybe he could do something?

FWIW I'm still a fan of 01 mainly because of it's ease of use for the home workshop tool maker.

    Regards
    Ray
