Derek - do you prefer using western style chisels or japenese ones?
Different strokes and all that ..

Great tools are not necessary to build great work, but nice tools certainly enhance the experience. I have collected more chisels than you can throw a stick at, but they all get used, in turn. They have different personalities and like family as I have been using them for so long - some decades now.

If you are struggling to sleep, you may wish to view the contents of the drawers in the "Underbench Cabinet" (bottom of this index page).

As to Western vs Eastern, those Japanese chisels are very specialistic, and not for all. These are handmade by Kiyohisa, and so special to use. They are no longer being made, and those that are available can fetch big bucks. I count myself lucky that I bought the slicks a decade ago, when they were affordable.

Here are my best Western chisels ...

After seeing such wonderfully skilled work of Derek and Ian my storage is much more mundane.
Very short of space and time I bodge this monstrosity up out of mdf and hot glue of all things; to be perfectly honest it works a treat.
One day I will replace it with something beautiful

Practical is as good as pretty, or as my mum used to say "handsome is as handsome does"

It's certainly neater & more convenient than some of my very early tool storage 'solutions'. But I would've made the front board a bit deeper so it covered the ends of the blades. I could see myself reaching for something at the back of a cluttered bench without paying due attention and coming in contact with a few very sharp things! But perhaps you deliberately did it this way so you can see the sizes? Hmmm, maybe a split board, or a glass front on Vers2.0?
    Cheers,

I agree but I wanted the tips hanging below as I wanted to see the carving chisel’s ends. I was lucky enough to be given some clear Perspex which it cut 50mm strips and screwed on, best of both worlds.

Didn't notice that, but it's easy to see once you know it's there!
Good one! We're on the same page....
