Chisels on the cheap
I picked up a set of the Aldi chisels yesterday ($13 for a set of four). I tried a couple out after flattening the backs and honing. To my surprise they took an edge and kept after a little paring of the endgrain on some old elm and spotted gum. They're not the prettiest but at that price what can you expect?
Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim
Any pics? I don't think that these are available in Perth.
I did discover a large cache of Axminster (UK) light duty mortice chisels at a salvage yard not far from home. These were selling for about $5-10 each. I bought one and reground the width to be a custom size. The steel has been decent. There are always nice surprises everywhere!

ps. should have mentioned that quite a few blokes were buying them. We all agreed that even if they only ended up opening paint tins it was worth giving them a try.

Good Buy. Looks like Ash to me and Chrome Vanadium is a hard steel.

Bill,I've had another go with the 12mm chisel, paring into an old piece of redgum(ex bridge timber). The damn thing stayed sharp. Perhaps I've been lucky ormaybe all the sets are like that.

Aldi can be a bit hit or miss with it's hand tools. I remember last year when they started to sell wooden hand planes, one forumite bought one for a laugh and discovered the blade steel was very good and with some minor fettling the plane could be used as anything between a smoother and a scrub. Suddenly everyone bought one. Including me.
Unfortunately sandgropers miss out on these sorts of deals due to WA's firm stance on Sunday and late night trading. As such ALDI won't move west of Victoria until the Western States have dragged themselves into the 20th century so if you want to buy anything like this you'll have to negotiate with an eastern states member to get one sent out.

We've had 7 day trading for a month or two now.
I believe the idea is for people who don't have to work on a sunday to be served by people with no choice but to work on a sunday.

Chisels all gone at our local Aldi. The last time I was so satisfied with them was when I bought their digital calipers at about $19. That's still in use.

we (Adelaide) have sunday trading now (for a long time) and open till 9pm , they (TV , 7 &9 etc) reported here that Aldi hasnt come here because coles and woolies have bought up/locked up all the sites zoned for supermarkets etc, even new areas when first entering the planning stage somehow the big two manage to get first dibs on the allowable land then coincidently any small fruit and veg vendors in the area that have operated and sold at decent prices for years have to close up shop due to 'health regulations' reported by, someone, or some such thing..older spots that used to have Bi-low supermarkets ect, even if coles owned a premise next door, coles now occupy and maintain both (just down the road from me is an example), it would seem they would rather maintain two supermarkets not more than a couple of hundred feet from each other, selling at half capacity (not half price!) just so Aldi or the opposition cant move in, there will come a time when they have more control than the banks, owning everything from farms and stations to all important retail outlets, fuel, health, alcohol ect
so we crow eaters miss out on these possible bargains as well, i wouldn't mind trying some of these cheap chisels myself, i'm not overly confident but it would be nice to try em
