    Default How many clamps...

    Hey all,

    In the process of building a 3m by 900mm by 40mm table out of blackwood. Just wondering how many clamps i would. I haven't as yet got the clamps, but i am thinking of getting 3 Bessey K body clamps(500mm gap at each end and then the clamps spaced at 1m)

    Is this enough? Or do I have to go for a cheaper option and have more?

    Not an easy question to answer, Nik. But for starters I would be planning to put a clamp quite close to each end, certainly not 500mm in, unless you are going to 'spring' each piece - getting a tight join on the ends is crucial.

    The short answer is, you need as many clamps as it takes to close the joins all the way along, without having to apply excessive pressure at any one point. And that will depend on the quality of the preparation. If all edges are perfectly square & straight, & you have a nice flat surface to glue up on, you could probably get away with 4 or 5 clamps. However, over such a long join, you may have a few trouble spots, & depending on how many boards you join at once & how perfectly jointed they are, you might need to have a few clamps over the top as well as underneath, to stop it from cupping the joins open on the top.
