Default How would you clean this wooden plane?

    Hi there!

I got this wooden plough plane with some other tools in a lot, a few weeks ago. Now I decided to clean it, and wanted to ask for your advise!

The metal parts are not a problem.. I will clean that with some steel wool. I would love to try electrolysis, but don't have the charger, and wouldn't try that inside an apartment.

My main question is about the wood body. It is VERY "dusty". Probably it was many years that way, and now the dust is more than dust.. it's some kind of "hard solid layer". I tried with a rag with some water.. but it's immutable .

I'm just about to try with steel wool, but that will also probably remove the old finish, and will have to re-wax again or similar.

I posted some pictures. I would appreciate any advise!

    Thanks very much!
    Mariano

    Hi Mariano,

That's a nice plane you've got there. I am usually using this mix to clean wooden planes. It cleans almost everything. Follow with boiled linseed oil.

Never seen one of them before. Looks a bit like an old modification. Where'd you find it ?

    Thanks for the replies!

Javali, I checked that list (thanks!), and tried to translate some of that elements to spanish (Turps, Meth.. I believe I got the others). At least "Turps" seems to be expensive here. I'm not sure what "Meth" would be yet . But I'll keep researching around those

Apricotripper, I bought it with some other tools from an old woodworking shop here in Argentina. I believe it's compelte and original, as I've seen some more of those here (altought I realize that it looks different from the European or the US style ones). I'm eager to give it a try!

Once I finish the cleanup, I'll post some more pictures so you can actually see what's under that layer solid dust!

    Thanks!

Great, thanks! I searched for "Methylated Spirits" and was able now to find the right product here, which is called "Alcohol Etílico", and it's cheap and handy. Also I was wrong about "Turps", and I found the right one now (cheap and common). Sorry to turn this thread in a language query!

I believe I have all the required elements now, so I'll give it a try with a rag, and see what happens.

    Best!
    Mariano
