bench vise
Hi guys,
After a little advice.
I think my next project will be to make a woodworking bench. Can anyone suggest which vises to use? Prices vary massively. $20 - $500. I was maybe thinking the record. Hare and forbes have them just over $200. 2 vises = $400 . Everything adds up .
Cheers
Sean

I have the record with a clutch. I reckon it is great. I believe that Carbatec supply a copy of the Record for a much lower price (say, $69). I think that the clutch is well worth having.

You should be able to find something useful that lasts for < $100 per vice.
Have you considered how wide an opening and how wide a face you will need?

and timbecon had torquata vices at the www show for $69 .
or you can go for a nice aussie made dawn quick action vice with a pivot front jaw for around $200 for 175mm

Timbecon. Some of the big trade tool places in Brisbane have them, so presume it's the same in other cities. Or try emailing them from their website for a dealer near you, but don't hold your breath waiting for a response - I'm still waiting a year later.
In the meantime, I tracked some down so I could get a good look at one, and decided I didn't like it, after all, but it's a matter of pesonal choice. (It was mainly the way it mounts - doesn't suit my bench style). I suspect the vises aren't made in Oz any more, too....
Cheers,IW

I've just installed a Groz vise that I bought from Carbatec. It's the larger one. So far so good. It's pretty well made and the screw and clutch both work well. I'll post some photos when the new bench is a bit nearer completion.
I believe I read a post elsewhere on these forums that said Groz had bought the casting moulds and manufacturing rights from Record - implying that Groz are producing to Record's original standards (?). Perhaps someone else can confirm this.

Col, I seem to recall that LV (?) said something about a small eastern Europe (Chekoslavakia?) based company bought the tooling for the Record vises and they may have possibly been making them for Record for quite some time.
Groz is, I think, from Europe somewhere, so it could very well be one and the same company.
I am not 100% sure aboiut all this, but the LV front vises are Record blue and look very familiar.

Gday Sean, did you check out Timbecon at the show, mate?
They had a 330mmx330mm (read:bigass ) Q/R vise for $89, down from $109. Quality seems OK, bought one meself
