I have an old RECORD 020.
Very good plane. They come up at auction, E BAY, at times or there are various old tool sellers on the net.
If you want a new one. Check this lin.

Lie Nielsen are bringing out a compass plane this year. Pretty sure it's going to be an Anniversary plane (30th - 1 year late).

I have a Record #020. It works well. LN are bringing out a model. It should be better.
Never buy Kunz. They are very poorly finished.

Ciao,
I have an old Stanley 113. It works well for me, even tough I haven't other compass planes for doing a right comparison.

A Stanley 20 1/2. Mine has a repair - the radius-adjusting screw was broken at some point, & reattached (brazed) to the front of the frog. However, it's a tolerably good repair which doesn't affect performance, & the reason I got it for a very reasonable price.
As others have said, it isn't an everyday tool, but when called for, does a very good job. For fairing the inside or outside of curved pieces like round table tops or curved frames, it has no peer - much easier & more accurate than a spokeshave. However, I got by ok for a long time before stumbling on mine, so unless I was planning a lot of work involving accurate curves (thinkng of wheelwrighting? ) there are probably lots of other tools that would be higher on my priorityu list...

Thanks for the heads up, on the quality of the "KUNZ"
I have known it was only a copy, but I am disappointed, it is a bad copy.
I will stick to my old "blue" for a few years yet.

Patrick Leach says the 113 can lose its setting during use and that Stanley added a screw for blocking the adjusting knob.
Mine has that screw and after a tuning up works but would be interesting to hear someone having both, #113 and #20/20 1/2.
Ciao

True, Giuliano, we tend to like what we are used to. I should confess that I have never had my hands on a 113, either, so I have no idea of how they compare with my 20 1/2 I like the simpler & possibly more robust '20' design, and it also strikes me as being a bit easier to hold than the 113, but I could be dead wrong there, too. Please stop by my shed with your plane some day & we'll compare them in action.....
Cheers,IW
