    Default Is this complete?

    Hi,

This is the Stanley 78 I found in my draw, as mentioned in my other thread.

My question is, is this complete, or are there some parts missing?

    Regards

    Wongdai

Without being able to see the right side of the plane, I'm guessing you're missing the fence and fence rod setup, and the depth stop (unless it's fully lowered). Also check for the little 3 point spur that sits flush with the right hand side.
All these 3 things are very useful and easily obtained quite cheaply. I use my 78 for a lot of work. I've found it's useful for larger runs to create an initial fence for my number 10 to run against when I want a more comfortable plane to grip.

Just had a look at the Tool Exchange, and all these parts are available, but seem a bit pricey to me - you could probably pick up a complete plane for the 50 odd dollars being asked.

I think I may have a spare spur and depth stop (I will have to check for the stop) that you could have. Don't have a spare fence and rod though

    Thanks mate,

That would be awesome. I will pm you so we can exchange address and money etc.

Is this plane mainly for rebating then?

So what is the little screw hole that you can see in front of the blade there for?

Ps can you send me a pic of yours?

    regards

If you have a look at THIS page you'll see a couple of 78's complete.
The hole is threaded and is for the rod that the fence attaches to, there will be one on the other side too for working left handed.

This plane cuts neat rebates with the grain, and with a sharp spur, quite well across the grain.
The hole just in front of the cutter is where the fence rod screws in. It can be screwed in on either side for cutting left or right handed rebates. The spur will cut only on the right side though.
Did you check if you have the spur ?
I'll check tonight to see if I have a spare depth stop (I definitely have the spur and screw).

A good pic of the plane is here
