Now, Peter said there was something special about it? dammed if I can see it.
I will take a guess and say..

Number 1, the unhandled screw arm fillister..

Now the next person has a 50/50 chance to clean up here!

    You got it Ray.
Plough plane makers have fingerprints like saw makers And that one is a Preston screw-arm fillister, not a Mathieson plane like the rest.
There are 4 matched pairs of planes, fillisters and ploughs. Well ALMOST matched.
Each pair have the same configuration, so to see an odd bod, look for the sticking out ears.
3 pairs match nicely, one pair don't, the finials on the Preston plane are different to the 3 other planes with screw-arms. Also the Preston knobs are very different, much less bulbous, and the bulbous part isn't the largest diameter like it is on the other 3 planes with screw arms, which are in the traditional Mathieson pattern.
The finials were clear in the first picture, and only the knobs on those two planes could be seen as different. I thought it a little too subtle, so took another pic with the knobs on the other 2 screw-arm planes clear to see.
    Regards,
    Peter,

Now that you point it out, comparing the shape of the finials, makes it seem obvious.

    Beautiful saws Ray.
    You're right - this one's easy.
The fourth one along is filed rip while the rest are filed cross-cut.
    Heh, Heh, Heh.................

Seriously, I don't know, but I have tried to read the makers and can't quite, and I don't know enough to distinguish them from their appearance alone.
Numbers 3, 4 and 5 do have gorgeous handles.

Ok, maybe it's not as easy as all that.... Time for a clue.

The Makers are, from left to right

    1. Bowden & Co
    2. Taylor
    3. Thos Tyzack
    4. R Groves & Sons
    5. Taylor Brothers
    6. Mathieson
    7. Thos Turner & Co
    8. Robert Sorby

    Hope that helps...

Taylor was related to Thomas Turner by marriage of his second cousin Ursula to Thomas' son Robert. Ursula had had a tryst with Robert Groves some 6 years earlier. She was most partial to the name Robert and through this brief liaison was born a daughter. Her great uncle T.Mathieson from Glasgow meanwhile had once had dinner with one of the Taylor boys who had worked for Robert Sorby. All of these people lived in England. Bowden was from America.

    Hey Prozac,

    LOL..

Very close.... but it was Alex Mathieson from Glasgow, not Great Uncle Tobias Mathieson... (and that was a clue..)

And Bowden was not from America, and he was related to Joe Tyzack from Sheffield.

too big a clue ray. they are all sheffield based companies bar the mathieson.

I would never have picked it up from the photo though.

what is your fav of the lot in that photo?.. the Tyzack looks pretty dreamy from here

    Bing Bing Bing,

We have a winner, I should have kept the clues a bit more cryptic.

Yes Mathieson is the only one not made by a Sheffield maker. This is of course a reversal
    of Peter's puzzle..

    Ok, Slow6 you're up..

    Regards
    Ray

PS I like the Richard Groves, The Thomas Tyzack is sweet little saw as well.

Just had to take a stab at it Ray. I thought it had to do with one of them not being local...but which one. Knew all except for Bowden who I couldn't find any info on, so he was my choice. I'll have to be more studious next time.

As it happens you were on the right track, Bowden & Co, was one of those secondary product lines made by Joseph Tyzack and Sons, 1895-1914. I only included it so that there would be more than one steel backed saw.

    You almost had it!

Let's see what mischief Slow6 can devise...

    Regards
    Ray

PS It is of course entirely possible that Mathieson had their saws made for them by someone in Sheffield, but they are primarily known as a Glascow based firm...

    Ray,
whilst we wait for Slow6 to charge the batteries in his camera...
You've probably seen more saws than anyone I know...who do you think was the possible maker of the Mathieson saws you've seen? Are there any "fingerprints" that stand out?
    Regards,
    Peter

    hello folks

I was planning something downright nasty but I got lost building a bench (well starting to build a bench) so here's a quickie before the light is completely gone for the day.

I'll be very surprised if this one sees out the hour.

    who doesn't belong?
    Best regards, Luban
