Maybe I made it too hard.

The odd one out is by a different maker.

Hope that doesn't make it too easy.

    Ray,
is the far right one a different timber for the handle? The rest look like boxwood, and that one beech?? seems a different patina to me?

    Peter

    Hi Peter,

Well spotted, you are correct, but that's not the one I'm looking for.

    Ah Ha....into photoshop...
Is the center left a Mathieson, they are one of the few makers I've seen who ever put their mark on the inside of a chisel ??

    Peter

Bing Bing Bing ... we have a winner... You picked the right chisel for the right reason
however it's not Mathieson, It's JB Addis , the rest are of course SJ Addis.

I think that means it's your turn...

Here we go again...another look at more of my tool collection, ploughs and fillisters this time...has taken a few years to find presentable examples of some of these, the ones with ebony stems especially.
What is the odd thing out and why?
Good luck! to see a larger picture look here
    Peter.

    Wow ...they are impressive !

I don't know much about these beasts, but is the bottom right the only one with a nicker ?

Beautiful planes Peter - thanks for sharing them.
This is going to sound like stream of consciousness prose but here goes:
    Here's what I see.
Four ploughs at the back, four fillisters at the front.
    All have depth stops.
Three of the four fillisters have a nicker.
All bar the two with the ebony rods have a fence fixed to movable rods. The ebonies have fixed rods and a movable fence.
Six have razee type handles two are plain.
I'm not sure what's left except maybe the fillister without the nicker has a replaced wedge made of a different timber - not sure what.
So that would be front row - second from right.

I thought I might have had it with that two, but the one on the far left looks like it has one also.
There's two on the left that look like they dont have totes, so I guess thats not it either.

    TT,
all the fillisters have provision for a nicker, and as SG has said one is missing the knicker and wedge, and perhaps has a replacement wedge for the iron...although that is true, it isn't my "odd thing out"
No clues for a couple of days...at least this one is lasting more than a few minutes, unlike my last couple
    Regards,
    Peter

    SG,
that fillister is missing the knicker and it's wedge, there is an empty hole where they should be. The wedge for the iron is beech, and has stains on it which match corrosion patterns on the iron, so may be the original that was carelessly cleaned up...or an early replacement. Well spotted, but not my "odd thing out"
    Regards,
    Peter

Wow, Peter you sure know how to raise the bar....

I'm guessing one is made with a different timber, maybe the second from the right at the back..

    Ray,
I thought my one woodwork tool was hard, but it took only a few minutes...they are all beech with boxwood where they are boxed, and a couple of beech wedges on arms replacing what should be boxwood.
    Regards,
Peter...waiting to see the reaction of someone, who gets one heck of a surprise to see a saw in the box as it's opened on Xmas day.
