Thread: Coping saw recommendations please

Sounds like you need a fretsaw; not a coping saw. These have a 12” throat:

Hegner

Bahco

Eclipse

Pegas

Hmmh

Ok, I recently purchase a relatively expensive fretsaw, knew concepts with settable blade angles. I thought that be a bit nicer., but I underestimated how much better. I can judge 45 degrees accurately and even on fret saw blade which very narrow this allow be cut is straighter than what I could do with a twisted fret saw blade. The higher stiffness is also appreciated

Now, with coping saw you should be able to see the set angle well enough, but I was also playing/ comparing with an eclipse coping saw both have pegasus blades and now the coping saw looks like it is relegated...
Mind you, the coping saw is/was way way cheaper.

Amen to that! The Eclipse blades offered in hardware stores are woeful but you can improve them significantly by sharpening them if you have the patience & a suitable vise to hold them. They are as soft as butter, so don't stay sharp long. Must try some Pegasus blades, thanks for the tip!

I'm assuming pegasus is a spellcorrect issue for Pegas? They are excellent, Swiss made blades. And the answer to the original post? Can't go past a Knew concepts saw. I held off them initially as a gimmick, bit they aren't, they're just a great re-engineering of the traditional tool. Buy one and love it.

I couldn't get a deep throat fretsaw quickly (locally).
So I've gone with what I have.
Got down to as far as I could. Now will use just a blade in a handle to rough out the rest.
Final bits will be dealt with by dremel and mini drum sanders.
I really like the Knew concepts, but could never justify the expense for the small amount of use I'd give it.

looking at what you are attempting I think you would be well served by a knew concepts saw. the leap in accuracy and removal of tedious correction is substantial enough, that even on small output it worth it. Smal set of very good tools is the mantra - if perhaps offset by the confusion of what is good tool.
