Thread: A couple of hand drills

My Wild-Ass-Guess at that picture is that it looks a bit Miller Falls to me.
(I think the wheel & spokes usually painted red.)

Thanks for pointing me that way Paul. I suspect the first one (the picture is called hand drill 2.jpg) may be a Goodell-Pratt, possibly a No. 379 judging by the handle shape (I should have posted all the pictures). Goodell-Pratt were bought by Millers Falls in 1931, and carried on making some of the Goodell-Pratt drills, usually changing the nickel plated gears for red painted ones. I don't think the second one is Millers Falls, because the crank handle is part of the casting for the gear, which is different from the Millers Falls ones I've found so far.

There are some similarities with the Metabo No.5000:
- grooves in main casting;
- housing over driven pinion;
- possibly cast crank handle.

but I don't think it's the same.

Thanks Vann. The closest that I had found was something referred to in an ebay ad as a "German hand drill", looking at your post that one was probably a Metabo.

The seller has been away, and so they haven't been posted yet, so it'll be a week or so still before I can look at them and try to find manufacturers marks and measure them up properly.

The one I thought looked 'Miller Falls'-ey ... I was thinking of this sort of thing ... doh ...

I forgot to update this thread when I received the drills. I'm fairly sure the one is a Goodell-Pratt 4 1/2. I was pleasantly surprised to find what looks to be the original fluted bits still in the unscrewable handle (Please excuse the poor photos, I don't actually own a camera* and used my phone)

I'm not sure what the second one is, although I suspect it may be a Metabo, but that's just because they made almost as many drills as Miller-Falls, and paint stuff green, and some of there's had cast cranks.

* I have bought a few reasonable cameras. My daughters each have one, and I keep postponing buying one for myself because they're so expensive, and I keep hearing about the new improved model due next month.
