Couple of Saws - Disston
Picked up a nice Canadian Disston crosscut today at a second hand store in Mt Barker measuring from between the points it is 6ppt, is this the correct way or do you measure from the point? Blade is in excellent condition with not pitting. My dad also gave me my Grandfathers old 4ppt rip saw. No idea what brand it is, can anyone tell from the handle or blade shape?
Keen to know whether people think the Disston handle is original, it has been stained and has a dowel running the length of the grip to secure the spilt that is in it? The detail on the hande does not seem to be as pronounced as some of the disstons I have seen. I am keen to make a pair of matching jarrah handles for the two eventually. Also both need a good sharpen and set, not sure I have the patience or time to learn to do that properly, anyone recommend a good hand saw doctor in Perth?

According to my reading of this the Disston is a D8. It must have been a much loved saw owned by a tradesman because the blade is in lovely condidtion and the stamped 7 that you can see on the example one on the Disston site is sitting right against the teeth on mine so it has been sharpened a few times. I think that the handle must be a replacement as it has an open straight slot and is not let in like the site describes.

Hi Burnsey,
Nice couple of saws, the handle on the D8 is probably original, (but repaired) I would guess fairly late manufacture, maybe 1940's 1950's something like that.
The other one, looks a bit reminiscent of a Spear & Jackson, try cleaning the saw plate with a sanding block and some 400 wet&dry with turps to see it you can find an etch or stamp.
You might try the same on the Disston see if any etch remains.
The PPI is the number of points per inch, so 5 PPI , means 1/4" between points.
