    Cool Craig's Shooting Board

I love Jim Davey's Shooting Boards, but will have to wait before I have the pocket money to buy one. I love that Veritas angle gauge especially.

While I save my pennies, I built this one out of laminated MDF, that my old kitchen was made of:

I can remove the 45 degree board, and I will add a board that will allow me to do longer pieces. I have been looking for a bit of UHMWP to put on the ramp for the plane. I have found the hold-down clamps to be more than adequate to hold the wood in place.

Nice work! What plane is that? Looks like a Bedrock style body but never seen one with a side knob.

Looks like a Record T5. They were made for schools. I have been on the lookout for one but the prices are a bit steep now.

That’s right; this one was made sometime after ‘57 (ogee shouldered frog) and before they changed the yoke from a casting to the cheesy 2-piece steel stamping in the late ‘60s.

It’s in remarkably good condition, the side handle doesn’t look beaten up at all. Has it been restored?

One of my early shooting boards was made from melamine coated chipboard from a kitchen build but I found the material way too brittle and provided no real support to the back edge of the workpiece. MDF may provide a little more support but may I suggest you add a thin strip of hardwood to the edges of the runner and the fences? That will give better support to the fibres of your workpiece and help reduce any moisture being absorbed by the MDF and swelling up. It’ll look prettier too, if that’s important (although most of my jigs and fixtures are butt-ugly).

    Thanks Bueller,
It is a Record T5 as people have posted. The handle has been restored, but it is in overall great condition
With the shooting board, it is incredibly useful.

    Hi Orraloon,
I got the Record T5 for my birthday 2 years ago. It came from the UK and worked out to around AU$220, including postage. I think my adult supervisor snapped up a bargain
They seem to be a lot more expensive now.

I've been thinking of running a thin strip of UHMWP to put down there, but I do like that hardwood idea I've deliberately made the top stop adjustable to allow that in future. As a temporary measure, beeswax should keep the worst of the moisture out of it, and keep the plane gliding smoothly along the base.
