I found this crazy moulding plane at a market here in Strasbourg. I can't imagine it was easy make or use. Does anyone have/use anything like it?

Looks as if it's used for shaping stair-rails. That's a lot of blade to push/pull.

Stair rails! Thanks Jim. I was puzzling over what needed such compound curves and I walk up and down stairs with insane goose neck bannisters every day.

You're right though, you'd need hydraulic arms to get it going.

Would be interesting to see doing a try with . Do you think you'll restore it?

Another possibility would be for machining architraves for arched windows and doors. Just a guess.

I didn't bring this one home, Guiliano. It was a 'catch and release' scenario.
Sometimes it's nice just to see them in the wild.

That was my initial thought, Graeme, but the fact that it curves side to side as well as front to back makes me think stair bannisters is the right answer. A simple front to back curve would suffice I'd imagine for a curved moulding.

I know I'm late to the party, but

whenever I see a plane like that, my immediate thought is it's a carriagemaker's plane.
your traditional carriage (as in the Queen driving down The Mall) is almost nothing but compound curves.

    I imagined elm as a light-coloured wood ... don't know why. It doesn't say ... I added a link to the page.

Does this count as curves ...

... Just trying to think of a figured euro hard wood that fits the bill.

Had a bit of a search for the 'naked lady' plane but no dice.
