Cutter angle for a 12-060 low angle block plane
Hi all,
A bit of advice pleae. I have a new Stanley 12-060 blockie which I'm sure needs some fine tuning as it is really quite an average shave at the moment. Can anyone tell me what the correct bevel angle should be (I'm a little confused with all the info out there). The literature seems to suggest a 21 degree bevel? If this is the case I have one of those standard honing guides that tells you 50mm = 25 degrees, 38mm = 30 degrees etc. Does anyone know what length I would need to have the blade projection in the honing guide to obtain an angle of 21 degrees (or whatever the correct bevel angle is). Also would it be advisable to have a micro bevel on this type of plane.
Thanks gang.

I think the 21 deg reference is to the bed angle not the bevel angle. A 21 deg bevel would be rather fragile. I would put on a 25 degree bevel with a 2 deg microbevel using the Charlesworth ruler 'trick'. But it is important to make sure the sole is lapped and the back of the blade is too. The first makes sure the plane registers solidly on the work (esp the mouth - this is important for cutting properly) the second makes sure you get a really sharp edge when you sharpen (you only need to do it once per blade).

I have a Li-Nielsen low angle block. Came from the factory with 25 degrees, so that's the angle I've kept it.

Hi Scoobs,
Just spent most of yesterday sharpening the shed.
Here is jig that you may find helpful, I use a "eclipse 36"
Main bevel I set @ 25 degress with the secondary micro bevel @ 30 degrees.
A set of jigs certainly make life easier, make them out of any scrap you have lying around. If you use the top clamp (most plane blades) then a jig with the fence set at 30mm and another at 40mm will do and for the bottom clamp (chisels) 38mm and 50mm.
Guess you have plane like the one in the picture, those shavings are from the plane sharpened as described 25/30.
Have fun.
Cheers
