Thread: D2 Plane Blades - Batch Order 02

Gave my 60x150x8 blade a bit of attention today, the back must have been pretty flat, as it didnt take long on the diamond plates to get it looking good. The King waterstones were struggling a bit to pollish it though. It will need some more work yet to get a mirror shine, anyway I got it pretty sharp. I tried it on a few bits of wood in this plane I modified in this thread- http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=46195
So far I am very impressed with the blade, it held up well to a fairly heavy workout on a piece of Cooktown Ironwood. Just need to spend some time making the plane a bit easier to adjust with the new blade.

Just reporting that I measured the hardness of the Second Batch of D2 steel and it seems to be a bit harder than the previous batch.
This new blade material is measuring between Rc 63 and 65 whereas the previous batch was between 61 and 62.5. This suggests they have not tempered it as back as much as batch 2. Although it's probably difficult to tell at these Rc values has anyone that has sharpened both batches reported any differences in degree of sharpening difficulty?
If it's that different one should be able to scratch the other but not VV.
