Thread: D2 Plane Blades - Batch Order 02

I understand were you are coming from. When I started looking into woodworking I made a huge list of tools Veritas, Lie-Nielsen, Colen Clenton, Chris Vesper, Glen Drake, on an on the list went. However as I learned I saw the truths that woodworkers of old made many of their own fine tools that we collect today, look at Studley tool chest made all from scraps. I saw how the likes of Krenov had just a simple wooden try squares to make his fabulous cabinets. I found the more you looked you could find plans for virtually any tool hand or electric that you could make yourself.
A homemade tool need not be scraggy, or shoddy, I think that the tool reflects the craftsman who made it. If he takes pride in all his work it will show.
I think their is a craving for brand names and brand awareness in the modern world to which we loose our self reliance. Their are some tools that I would still buy like a good dovetail saw, or Glen Drake marking gauge. However my list do to list is now filled tool projects tools that I need but need not purchase.
I will not list them all or the thread will go off topic but my list keeps growing. I feel that even if I never build anything but tools I am still doing the thing I love and that is what matters.

Crikey TS - they sound like lines from my own song sheet there mate
Don't be frightened by trying to make a dovetail saw. Having made a basic tenon saw, the leap can't be too far from that. BTW have finlly finished the "how to" on that saw and can can make it available to anyone who PM's me.
Cheers

We are down to the last couple of blades in all the sizes. After some consideration I have added an extra option for 200 mm length blades these will the same length as the Stanley Bench plane blades and would be a better option for those seeking to make an infill style plane, then the 150 mm lengths.
If you wish to change your order and get some 200 mm instead of 150 mm PM me. These will be monster blades.
I expect to run out of ground D2 flats well before the 8th of December cut of date. We sold out of the 50 x 8 mm size.

Hello,
BobL, very nice saw! What's the weight or it?
I have an example how not to make a dovetail saw, or actually how not to attach handle and back together. Only handle and blade.

Thanks Sumu, it weighs 780 grams. Unfortunately it does not cut quite as good as it looks. However, I think i now know why and it is due to the teeth not being evenly spaced enough. It was the first set I ever cut from scratch and I have since made this tooth indexer but haven't had a chance to use it yet.
Cheers

Orders are now been taken again, refer to post 32
D2 Plane Blades - Batch Order 02 is now closed. All of the 5000 mm of D2 has been allocated.
I will post back in this thread as soon as blades from Batch Order 01 come back from milling and heat treatment. After grinding the primary bevel, sharpening and after some initial testing of the Batch Order 01 blades. I wish to start delivery to those who are not doing a pickup their Batch Order 01 blades. As soon as we get the on the Batch Order 01 blades from those who placed their order and I am confident in the process established in the manufacture of the blades, only then will I proceed with Batch Order 02.
So stay tuned.

I bet they are .
So, how has it been, to engage in, manage and report the project and it's progress? Documentation and updating has been pretty good, indeed.
From where I am watching it looks very good. If I were one of them "customers" I would feel quite confident at the moment.

I had put the numbers into Numbers because I was losing track of where things were going.
Because we must buy all ground D2 flats in 1030 mm lengths I had to regrettable drop my only 150 x 80 x 8 mm blade because all the 80 x 8 mm D2 steel had been over allocated to other members. Good thing I went over the numbers.
Now that the numbers have been crunched the tally stands at 36 blades.
To help to keep it clear as it is getting a little complex I have given all the size colour codes. Red 50 mm x 8 mm Green 60 mm x 8 mm and Blue 80 mm x 8 mm.
We will be getting 1030 mm of the 50 mm x 8 mm, 3120 mm of the 60 mm x 8 mm, and 1030 mm of the 80 mm x 8 mm. Remembering the extra 30 mm per length will be lost in the saw kerf for every 1030 mm section.
Therefore so far members have claimed from each length of ground flat D2
1030 mm of 50 mm x 8 mm ----- 1030 mm claimed with NIL left for other members to claim SOLD OUT
3060 mm of 60 mm x 8 mm ----- 3060 mm claimed with NIL left for other members to claim SOLD OUT
1030 mm of 80 mm x 8 mm ----- 1030 mm claimed with NIL left for other members to claim SOLD OUT
For those who have missed out this time or are sitting on the fence waiting for the blades to come back from Plane Blade Batch 01. Remember that if their is sufficient interest I would be willing to add more blades for members to the order, all that would be required is to get enough blades in what ever length to be allocated another 1030 mm length.
Talking with Bobl and Sumu, these blades need not go into planes, with a 45º bevel these make excellent scrapers, with no need to turn a burr. This is how Terry Gordon recommends Australian Hardwoods to be scrapped
