You will have to wait until the 19th of Jan, because that is when Kman and I will be fitting the wedge.

Not needed technically however I just like the look of a plane with laminated sole. Having a two complimentary woods make a nice aesthetic. Laminating a sole came about from northern hemisphere were softer woods were used for the body and a more expensive and or exotic hardwoods that were more durable would be used for the sole.

kevjed all help is valued. Sorry about the nick.

I look forward to all you blokes to start posting your photos of your planes taking "curly whirlies".

    TS, Kman, Kev,

Very original, very deep toned, very powerful looks. I have not seen alike anywhere. About the shape, I'd say you guys follow the vision you have in your minds.

The looks of the plane will be finally revealed after when finished, used, when covered with shavings and after some dents. Then you'll know how it looks like. I bet you will like it, but every one of you will have ideas for the next one, that's for sure, too.

If you can easíly get a grip on it and lift it off the bench and the wood you are planing, then the primary ergonomics are covered. Almost everything else in that field is more or less personal. I'd say finish it the way you have already chosen .

    kippis,

    Default Plane Update

I added the spotted gum sole today, it took a little effort cutting the mortice my hand I am however very happy with the outcome, the glue line is faultless and, I have left the mouth very tight so it can be open up it and still take fine shavings.

I need to work on the mouth next open it up for the blade to pop through.

    Attachment 64353Attachment 64354Attachment 64355

    EDIT

I found that it is very important to get two very flat surfaces and that the best finish came from truing the sole and the sole of the plane on the lapping plate, this made sure that both surfaces were flat and true and gave a perfect fit. I have attached the sole with hide glue, as I expect to eat through the sole fast and since hide glue dissolves in hot water when I need to add a new sole a quick soak in hot water and the sole will simple work lose with a clean joint ready for a new sole.

Ahh and before you ask epoxy was used for the plane body.

Hardwood Sought for Members to Make Wooden Planes

I started this thread Hardwood Sought for Members to Make Wooden Planes for members looking to get their hands on some suitable durable, and stable timber for making wooden hand planes. If you are interested Bushworker in VIC is willing to sell at a discount rate for bulk order/group purchase. Please post your interest, quantity and dimensions that would suit your plane making needs and he will try to meet your needs.

It is only right that some beautiful wood be used to match some very nice plane blades. I am trying to get someone in each state to possible supply timber for those members who purchased plane blades. Dai Sensei has some Gidgee, Rose Sheoak and Dead Finish, and Ironwood has some Cooktown Ironwood for those members interested in QLD.

If you have suitable timber you are willing to share, trade, or sell then maybe someone would be interest in what you have.

You might find you can soften the glue with a hot iron pry it off. This would avoid soaking the plane in hot water, which might cause distortion of the plane body.

    Plane Blade
    Batch 02
    is now Closed

Thanks to Dai Sensei and Jarrahfrog for picking up the last two blades in the batch.

    Recap

For those who have not read the whole thread this is a short recap.

The batch 02 planes blades will be made from D2 and is being manufactured in Sweden by the Uddeholm steel mill, part of the Bohler Uddeholm group. The internal name for Uddeholm D2 is Sverker 21. For Further information and a chemical analyses of Sverker 21 click here.

    E.T.A.

Orders are now closed and no further order will be taken. On Monday the 14th of January 2008 I will place the order for the D2 to be shipped from Sweden. The D2 will arrive 8 - 10 weeks later here in Australia as it is coming by ship and should arrive around the 10th of March 2008.

At this point I will do a pickup of the D2 and ship the 44 kg/11 meters of steel to Rippon Grinding who will grind a 25º primary bevel before the steel is shipped to Oppy Heat treatment were it will undergo heat treatment to Rc 60 - 62. Once the heat treatment is completed the steel will be returned to Rippon Grinding where it will be milled flat and true on all faces. The grinding, heat treatment and milling should take no more then two weeks. At which point I will pickup the complete plane blades ready for distribution to members of this forum.

I expect the D2 plane blades to be ready by the 25th of March 2008

    Payments

Payments by members will only be collected just before the 10th of March 2008, I will PM members with details closer to that date, pickup in Melbourne is OK as in Batch 01. If you require postage, please PM me with your name, and address closer to the 10th of March 2008. Postage costs is not included in the price of the blades.

    Thank You

I wish to extend a thank you to everyone who has consulted, contributed, and purchased a blade as part of Batch 02, this has been a massive undertaking, and without the support and trust of everyone involved none of this could have ever taken place.

    So

    You guys are amazing.

    Conclusion

I will post periodic updates and will PM important developments as they arise. I look forward to seeing some beautiful planes that should make us all proud. I will be keeping an eye on Plane Blade Batch 01 thread to see amazing planes comes to life.

    Default Spare Blades

I have outlaid the funds for spare blades in excess of my needs as part of batch 02. This will assure a steady supply of blades to members of this forum for the foreseeable future, without the lead time associated with a major batch run.

These blades will be sold with a small margin to members to help in reimbursing some of the expenses incurred in their production. The price of a TS-D2 blade will be matched to an equally sized but lower abrasive resistant O1 and A2 high carbon tool steel blades sold by commercial manufactures. The blades will be available in the most popular sizes of 100 x 50 x 8 mm, 100 x 60 x 8 mm and 100 x 80 x 8 mm and will come with a 25º primary bevel and mirror finished backs.

    Default Update

I have passed on the order for the D2 and O1 steel to Warren at Bohler Uddeholm Australia. He is in the process of confirming the prices and should have it to me at the end of the day.

I have not been able to contact John at Rippon Grinding as I am told that he is still on holiday and will not be in the workshop until next week.

I will therefore hold of on the order from Bohler Uddeholm, until I can confirm the details with John for the milling, heat treatment and grinding, as they were discussed before xmas with him. That way we can avoid any nasty surprises.

Warren has informed me that since this is a custom order and Bohler Uddeholm has to roll, grind and ship the steel to our specification almost all the way around the world from Sweden to Australia Bohler Uddeholm is asking for the payment for the steel to be made up front since it is a few thousand dollars worth of steel for them.

As soon as I talk to John at Rippon Grinding and all details and prices are confirmed end to end I will PM all those who are taking part in batch 02 with payment details.

I will try to keep members as informed as I can through the whole process.

    *Update*

Warren has just confirmed the prices for all the steel and it comes to a tidy sum of $1869.01 , he has also confirmed the 8 to 10 week wait which is almost three months. Good I got some extra.

Now we have to wait for John to come back to work and as long as the quotes stand which it should we will just have enough funds to fill batch 02.

    Hi Thumbsucker,
does this mean that you will now be asking for 50% payment very soon and the other 50% when the steel arrives in Oz?
    With thanks
    Kevin
