DAR - Hand Plane RACE!
23 minutes and 34 seconds! + Plus time penlties. of 1min 30
Thats the time to beat.
Confused? Let me fill you in.
I challenged Jason (our full time turner) to a race, to dress a board on 6 sides with hand tools. Eager to take my cash he accepted and, well... I'm up 5 bucks
We quickly formulated rules and it was quite fun and tolarences must be tight!
So we are going to try and make this a regular thing.
Last Friday of the month. If any one want's to take The Lumber Bunker Title Belt (no there is no actual belt... but that would be cool) send me a PM and turn up at 3pm on the last friday on the month.
Here's the rules.
You get a piece of camphor (straight grained) 150 x 25 x 400 rough sawn
nominate your finished size (140 x 19 x 300) is assumed but you can nominate 22mm thick if your board will allow.
Useing only handtools, planes, gauges, straight edge, winding sticks etc. plane your board.
Start on the beep (i have a cool little timer that beeps)
record the time when you finish.
Easy enough. Untill you check your work!
Take a straight edge and cheack for flat in three places across the face. If you see light - add 30 seconds for each place light appears
check the back in three places
use a square to check the edges in three places. (6 minutes in time plenalties so far)
check the ends for for square, from the face and from the edge (8 minutes so far)
Check for twist. If winding sticks are not level add 30 seconds
Check for thickness. in four places. (every 0.5 mm away from your nominated thickness = 30secs) and if measurments are different add 30sec for each, (11minutes so far)
Check length and width. add 30secs for every 0.5mm you are out
Jason wants his cash back so is in heavy training. and i'm hoping that my rough work will not generate too many time penalties to get me through.
Will try and get a vido of the next race and post on you tube or such.
So no beer or sex untill the last friday of the month if you are serious!
post here if your keen to come along, and i'll get a nice "straight" peice of camphor ready.Steven Thomas

We're keen for fresh competition Alex. It's good to see how other people work too. The biggest difference for me and jason was I used a shooting board for the ends, he did not, and it cost him a good chunk of time.

It'll be interesting to see how much more accurate and speedy you get over time
I'd join in but can't afford to give away great swags of cash

It does sound like a lot of fun. If I could be there I'd be in on it. Better fun than the old Fuze ball table we play on at smoko. I'd get the boys involved in something like that, but I'm the only one there I think who knows how to sharpen a plane blade .
