I will never buy another permanently set square!

You will learn.... usually the expensive way... buy dropping your favourite square & it'll be stuffed.

Now if you have an adjustable square, after you drop it you will be able to re-adjust it back to perfectly square.

Today I ordered from Lee Valley:

LA Jack Plane with plus the 38 and 50 degree additional blades,
    Medium shoulder plane, and
a pair of 1/2" skew chisels.

Once you have the LA block plane you will realise that LA is the way to go

I guess as that is my current order it doesn't answer your question.

As soon as this order is processed I will be ordering from LV (gotta keep the price down, bloody customs):
Scrub plane, haven't decided on A2 or HCS blade yet, and the price just rose!
Scraping plane, I currently have the insert so this may suffice for a while,
And either the LA or BU Smoother, I haven't decided yet. I do like the fact that the BU blades are interchangeable with the Jack but you can shoot with the LA.
A bit of advice here please Derek

I could just spend all that money on ONE LN plane but what would be the sense in that

    Jack.

I don't possess a scrub plane and I'm almost certainly going to need one to thickness the table top boards for the Diary Of A ... etc project. I really fancy another Lie-Nielsen plane so the next Dark Side purchase is probably going to be one of these

    G'day Lou,

I've just (well a few days ago) ordered one of Colen Clenton's little 4" squares from HNT Gordon ; they're engineered so that if one if foolish enough to drop or bang it, it is re-calibratable. Quite expensive, but absolute gems!

Having seen and used an example at a fellow Woody'd place, I've been drooling ever since. Mind you, the same could be said for LV planes, Sorby chisels, and a whole lot more.

    Oh! my poor aching wallet

Still, since SWMBO (of SHBMO if yoy prefer) has been superceded with GWMBO, that's one more battle I don't (yet!) have to fight...

    Cheers!

    Jack,

I know what you mean, and I've been sorta-kinda following the same line of reasoning, but there's a small nagging voice in the back of my head that keeps saying "so what, if you get an LN, in another day/week/month, you can get another, and another and"... Arghhh!

Are there pills to take as an antidote to this sort of thing? Please

    Cheers!

Lou why not go with a starrett? They are a dime a dozen on ebay... the postage does bite though...
You can never have enough planes, that is why Mr Stanley invented the 1/2s

Do yourself a favour and seriously consider a Colin Clenton square — they're superb (my favourite are the lace sheoak)

However, as to what comes next... it'll be one or more of these

I was thinking of a muji (or two) when I get around to it. Would like a tenon/dovetail saw too while Im at it.
    J!

My opinion is neither copyrighted nor trademarked, and its price is competitive. If you like, I'll trade for one of yours.

Shop around, I managed to win a full brand new Starrett set on ebay, metric rule and the cast steel top of the line bodies, A$176.00 including postage. Seems that a woman bought a shop in the US and this was part of the stock she thought she would have trouble unloading.
Back on subject, I've got a LV LA smoother and cant wait to get a LV LA Jack.

New Lou - this is bloody good advice. I have had it with squares. The only one I trust is an old Record combination job, though the LV 4" double is pretty good. Buy Aust. and adjustable, and go Colin Clenton - it's on my list for sure. Aluminium still bends!

I have once again dipped into the LV lolly shop (that site is the Dark Side of the Moon) and the new scrub is on it's way along with a few other essentials. I also scored a set of firmer chisels on ebay, so no more goodies for.....a wee while anyway!
