    Default Darkside tendancies

I cut some tenons this morning for a bed I am making and the thought came to me ' Gee it would be good to have a shoulder plane to clean them up'.
I've seen the beautiful work of art type one in magazines but does anybody know of a reliable (reasonably priced) shoulder plane?

Careful, careful, you are showing early symptoms of a fearful disease that has infected many of us. Be warned, it gets worse before it gets better.....if it ever does.

Terry Gordon makes a very nice shoulder plane.

Between $150 and $200 depending on the size and the wood it's made from.

    Check out his web site.

    carry pine,
I'm in a similar situation and i'm tossing up between quite a few options.
Leaning towards the LV large shoulder plane but also tempted by the LV bullnose shoulder plane as well as a few options from LN- the 140 skew and even the rabbett block plane.

I know these are all different planes but think i will end up with the LV large shoulder- just seems to be solid and has a good flat shoulder for keeping 90'. just worried it is a little wide for cleaning up rebates/dado/grooves

I'm very interested in other opinions,

    Robert

    Craig,
Thank you but I was hoping for something a little friendlier in price. I purchased a beautiful square once and it went out of whack (see Gremlins in the WC on Triton thread) and for the time being I need to use the old non-adjustable one that never goes out.
Just a plain old shoulder plane- doesn't need to be mahogany or anything!

And it doesn't seem right doing woodwork stuff, chiseling away at tenons etc. Like where' the noise and the dust? Will the neighbours think I've had a bad turn or something and come looking for me?

Smmooth shiny steel, polished timber handles, knurled brass knobs, razor sharp blades, whispy shavings, the smooth slicing of wood by metal.

come to the dark side..... come to the dark side.... come to the dark side.

seriously if you want cheap think of a used #78 (i think) the purists will say no no but they are reasonably common & cheap.

Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.

I've got an HNT Gordon 3/4" shoulder plane in Ironwood which cost about $130 last yr. It's one of his 'bargain planes'. The body is 1/64" narrower than the blade. Absolutely negligible issue.

    Beautiful plane. Love it!

When you've used a nice shoulder plane, taking just a thou' shaving off a tenon's shoulder to reach a "just right" fit, and that with a stroke of a hand plane - well the satisfaction is right up there.

None of all that noise and dust and commotion, and lopping of 1/10" with a tailed beast when you just wanted 1/1000"

S/H shoulder planes are certainly in the marketplace, but may need to fettling. Try one though, but be aware: you'll soon be hankering after an LN or two...

You should have bought one of Colen Clenton's then. His squares are adjustable (and a thing of beauty).

I paid $125 for my Gordon 1/2" shoulder plane in ironwood a couple of years ago.

So maybe I overquoted on the price. I got mine on sale from MIK though.

Still way cheaper than a LN or LV though.

If price is a big issue then maybe Soundman's advice is the way to go.

As soundy sed, apparently a Stanley #78 rebate plane can be used for this job and more; and, more to the point, can be had very cheaply secondhand as it's a pretty common plane.

I got mine for $12, plus a depth stop from Jake for nix ( ) and a fence from the Melb tool drool 2006 for $10 (I think )

Here's a pic (not mine) of what you're looking for:
