Dawn No 7 Vice
Hi
I have found one of these on a scrap heap. The bronze thread that holds the shaft is worn. (I've included 2 pics) Are these replaceable?

You could get one machined for you, it'll cost you though

Yep that's what I though too. I was wondering if these could be purchased as spare parts because they look like they wear out easily. I guess I could rig up some sort of nut to sit at the back of the shaft but what the busch does is allow the clamp to slide up to the job being held before you need to engage the clamp.

Dawn stopped making these 10 years ago. I'll just go to plan B. I reckon I'll be able to rig something up

Update
Well, this is a story that has been over 15 years in the making. I found this old No7 vice on a scrap heap. It had been used in the work shop of an institutional training school
and had copped a hammering over the years. I tried to mount it on my bench and found out that the U nut was stuffed. So there it stayed.
After joining this forum I resurrected it, and after contacting Dawn found that they did not make the part any more. That should have been the end of it but back under the bench it went.
I had a thought and phoned Dawn again late last year and spoke to the "old bloke" (his words) in the store room who suggested that I use a cast iron Ubolt from a different vice,
same thread just bigger all round.

The angle grinder fixed that, and now I have a beaut new/old bench vice.
Its not a pretty bench and I really need a new one. This isn't a bench so much as a flat surface I fix things on that has been slowly converted to a wood workers bench of sorts.
A friend saw what I was doing and gave me an old leg vice that had been in his fathers shed for as long as he can remember and he is 62.
I will not make any further improvements on the bench because I would rather put my energy into a new one.
This has been a really satisfactory experience. The pics tell the story better

Well done all round, TT. It's good to close an old thread with a stisfactory resolution of the original problem. Also good to see that a job that looked like it might never be completed actually got finished - gives me hope!
Cheers,IW
