Thanks guys... I'll go back to them again (and ask for an old guy to be put on the phone).

Rang them again... "Sorry we don't have that part.... haven't made the for years". Any ideas?

Ask the metal work section blokes to make the part. They are generally very helpful

Surely someone must repair / restore vises, In the market place WTB section could you see if anyone has a "donor" vice eg one with a crack etc that you can get your part from?

No such thing as a metal work section anymore Pac Man.... its all been outsourced to companies, that employ people to work public sector hours for union pay, and end up with a return on investment which makes the shareholders happy... no offence to union members or public servants.

I have in the past found springs that will do the job at, of all places, That big green shed. You could go to a spring manufacturer and order one, done that before as well.

Failing that and engineers supply like Blackwoods may be able to help.

I got these pictures of the net and added arrows .

Is the spring on these vices a spiral spring up in where the green arrow is pointing ?
Or is the spring the bit that the red arrow is pointing at ?

I think the long length of steel that the black arrow is pointing at shifts the half nut [ if that's the right name ] yellow arrow second picture

The green arrow points to the spring that I need to replace. It holds the long metal bar into position, which in turn engages the 1/2 nut up onto the screw post. I'll post a pic tomorrow of the spring... after I find where my camera is at.

Take the old spring to a spring making company and have one made it won't cost much and it is well worth fixing a vice like that e.g

I have exactly the same vice and it has only slipped once or twice. I'm guessing that mine is probably about the same age as yours, so mine are probably due for replacing also.

When you find a source for the part, could you get 2 made up and I'll pay you for the part and postage?

could possible try the return spring from the starter from a mower. I know some of the older mowers have a long strip of spring steel that returns the cord , or other mowers you wind the top then trigger the release and it turns the engine to start. You may be able to use a short length of something like that for the vice spring. The spring steel is basically the same sort of size material it just way longer.
