Dick Proenneke - Alone in the Wilderness.
I am sure people have seen this before, but as some who has some desire to do some limited subsistence stuff I enjoy these videos. Sorry if its in the wrong forum.
When I go camping, I always have a knife and a hatchet, and I use the two to whittle away at timber to do do things like make spoons and figurines. None are perfect, far from, but I learn a lot about timber and grain by doing so. Been doing it for years now.
Anyhow, I enjoy watching vids like this where almost everything is done by hand. What little things I do pail into comparison, but I learn stuff from it.

Definitely worth watching, there are a couple of videos done after he passed away by people who knew him as well. He was a very clever and resourceful man.

Yes, I sometimes dream of doing the same thing. I wonder why our early settlers preferred the slabbed hut as opposed to the log cabin. His tools made short work of the pine. That may be a clue. And I would have found a way of sneaking a spokeshave in with my kit or maybe a draw knife.
