    Default dimensions for #8?

well, it's finally got to the point where i need to build a rack for my planes

    but i don't (yet) have a #8, & i want to build a space in for it

(for when one finally pops up at a price i can afford...)

could some kind person give me the length & width of one of these beasties?

(height doesn't really matter for what i have in mind)

    thanks

Don't know the dimensions of the Stanley versions #8 and #608 (the bed rock model), but according to the nice folks at LN (I asked some time ago for a similar reason) their # 8 is
    24" long
    3-1/16" wide
    5-1/2" high

I have an old No8 that I reach for so often for lots of jobs, big & small. I tidied the plain up after purchasing it on thieve bay & it's just so sweet. One of the things I did was purchase a replacement chip breaker from Phil at Lie Neilsen for the 8...only to find that it didn't fit the position of depth adjuster. The plane is an older model & LN supply a replacement breaker with the hole in the correct position.
What I suspect here though is that No8's may actually vary in size according to the age & place of manafacture. I think width will be pretty much OK within a few mm, but you might find the length varies a tad (???10mm at a guess) depending what you get.
Any other stanley planes I have multiples of (4's 41/2's & 5's ) all vary a little in length & width & thickness of body material.
    Your goanna love an 8

Be a little careful because as Johnno has said, there may be a little variation from make to make.
2 5/8 inches is the blade width, the plane body is a little wider either side of the blade.
Number 8's are an awesome piece of ironmongery, and a testament to the planemaker's art.

    stu -
thanks - i know where you got that info!

but i'm looking for the the width (and length) of the plane itself, for a custom rack, not just for the width of the iron...

Wish I had an 8 that I could measure for you

I assumed that if the length was an actual measurement, the width would be as well

patrick's b&g website sets out its measurements that way - length of sole, width of iron...

    ...dunno why

if i make it with a little wiggle room, it should be just right when one of these babies drops (hopefully from not too high) in my lap...
