The ugly duckling turns into a swan. What a great find and a double bonus to find so much history.

I was *really* surprised by that one.

I thought after I should search "Miners Handsaw" ... but not that much turned up.


It came up with this Tyzack catalogue - which others have found before me I'm sure ... and doesn't mention "Miners"
But the number/letters probably copy the S&J equivalents of the time I'm guessing, so an "A25" is compatible with the models shown.

"TWO DEAD MINERS.One Instantly Killed by a Snow-slide and
the Other Mortally Injured.
BRIDGEPORT, Cal., December 17th (via Hawthorne, Nev., December 18th).— William Robson and Jacob Weaver were found near their mine — the Clifton — one dead and the other dying. They had been caught by a heavy slide of snow down the steep mountain side, into which their tunnel ran. They failed to come to town, as was their custom; and a search party climbed the hill to look for them. Weaver was found alive, buried under the broken timbers and debris of the cabin in which they lived. Both legs and one arm were crushed by the timbers and were frozen almost to the body by the cold. He was conscious when found, and said he thought he had been so confined for five days since the slide occurred. During that time he had gotten hold of a hand-saw, and while trying to free himself of the fallen timbers had nearly sawed the frozen arm from his body without feeling it. When he was released the rescue party started with him to town, but he died before they reached the foot of the mountain. Robson's mangled body was found about fifteen hundred feet down the mountain side below the cabin, where it had been carried by the avalanche of snow and rocks. Both men were buried at Lundy to-day."

The miners' handsaw in the 1915 S&J catalogue is designated No 90.
