The Dirtiest Saw I Own ...
and now I know why!
A huge surprise in this saw. I first received a saw from SG through ebay ... which turned out quite interestingly ... http://www.backsaw.net/index.php?opt...read.php&t=512
I have been wondering about the handle-shape ... specifically the void ... it is pretty unique in my experience, and somewhat in the direction of the saws Mike Stemple has from Platt, Holroyd etc. Homesy had remarked that it looked very (early) S&J to him ... which made me go looking at the examples I have from say 1850-1900.
I wanted to get pics together into an album so I could ask for opinions from the people who actually know about this saw stuff, and this saw qualified for inclusion ... but although I didn't want to spend a heap of time on this, even I couldn't leave it as-is without at least making it a bit more cared-for-looking.
This was the consequence of that ...
--
This S&J was soooo rough-looking that it didn't ever make it in from the garage ... it has been around here for a while now.
I hope I find a "before" photo ... the front was worse than the back ... add paint blobs, black gunk, and a moonscape blade ...
The back ...
20140211_171317 (Medium).jpg
The front after initial smoothing over ...
20140211_171353 (Medium).jpg
Starting to make a break in the dark rust ... and making out part of an etch ... a letter "A" ...
20140211_171402 (Medium).jpg 20140211_171406 (Medium).jpg 20140211_171429 (Medium).jpg
First gear was some 120 ... second gear ... well-used 120 ... now down to some used 180 that feels pretty smooth to the thumb ...
and lighter strokes, except where it is darker ... and WD40 until you can't see well under your strokes. Then wipe off and repeat.
Ahah ... a strong etch ... very nice! (and very unexpected)
20140211_171825 (Medium).jpg ... inside the garage, with flash and WD40 ... 20140211_171932 (Medium).jpg
but wait, there's more!

There was more etch appearing closer to the handle ...

until ...

So in the end ...
SPEAR & JACKSON over Crown and S&J
SHEFFIELD
WARRANTED CAST STEEL
PATENT (A ON 25) MACHINE
GROUND
MINERS HANDSAW
then
MADE EXPRESSLY FOR
MILLER & Co. PROPY Ld
MELBOURNE & BALLARAT
Definitely a ripsaw from the extra curled-over handle void.
Date guess ... say 1890?
This makes up a little for the S&J 888 I have kinda spoiled.
Cheers,
Paul

The ugly duckling turns into a swan. What a great find and a double bonus to find so much history.

I was *really* surprised by that one.
I thought after I should search "Miners Handsaw" ... but not that much turned up.
It came up with this Tyzack catalogue - which others have found before me I'm sure ... and doesn't mention "Miners"
But the number/letters probably copy the S&J equivalents of the time I'm guessing, so an "A25" is compatible with the models shown.
http://www.tyzack.net/Saws.pdf
ok ... mentioned in the index ... http://www.tyzack.net/Allindex.pdf
... idiot. First link ... page 9 ... right at the top "Handsaws for Miners' Use"
It doesn't zoom well, but possibly those Tyzacks have "Miners' Use" on the blade.

BIG photo here, but you can't really see the saws that well.

Daily Alta California, Volume 83, Number 172, 19 December 1890
"TWO DEAD MINERS.One Instantly Killed by a Snow-slide and
the Other Mortally Injured.
BRIDGEPORT, Cal., December 17th (via Hawthorne, Nev., December 18th).— William Robson and Jacob Weaver were found near their mine — the Clifton — one dead and the other dying. They had been caught by a heavy slide of snow down the steep mountain side, into which their tunnel ran. They failed to come to town, as was their custom; and a search party climbed the hill to look for them. Weaver was found alive, buried under the broken timbers and debris of the cabin in which they lived. Both legs and one arm were crushed by the timbers and were frozen almost to the body by the cold. He was conscious when found, and said he thought he had been so confined for five days since the slide occurred. During that time he had gotten hold of a hand-saw, and while trying to free himself of the fallen timbers had nearly sawed the frozen arm from his body without feeling it. When he was released the rescue party started with him to town, but he died before they reached the foot of the mountain. Robson's mangled body was found about fifteen hundred feet down the mountain side below the cabin, where it had been carried by the avalanche of snow and rocks. Both men were buried at Lundy to-day."

What a brilliant set of posts Mr. McGee!!!
From a rusty handsaw through a history of the Millers to a rope and twine "gang".
Bit like a Monty Python script without the funny bits.
Methinks you missed your calling in life!!
