Default New saw - Disston 77 teeth and taper.

    Hi All

Was experimenting with 45 degree flem filing and tapered plate - Disston 77 style. To support actual use built a new saw

Many thank to Ian For for contribution, and Ian (again) , Paul and Zac for their advise and input..

So far as commented in thread crosscutting is tad slower on a pre stroke basis, but the action is smoother. It is a good saw for arriving at a precise cut..

Your saw looks very good. Can you give a little more detail on exactly what you went with? (Oh No! Ending a sentence with a preposition. That's the second time I've done it today ).

I can see the saw plate is a re-purposed hard pointer (excellent) and perhaps you have given more details on timber, ppi and tooth angles elsewhere in previous threads. I gather the fleam is 45° (a la Disston No.77), but what rake did you select? And the timber?

Overall, the saw has a very pleasing look to it. I like the brass backs, although others prefer steel.

    Regards

    Hi Paul

Handle is sheoak - should have looked more closely at the offset I used - the piece I shape had not one but two fractures in it. Repairs, even before finished.
Flem 45 degrees, rake 0, set 0, TPI 8, plate taper according to caliber- 0.7 to 0.48- aiming at lifting aggression with the higher TPI. At this level of flem starts are easy and smooth.

The a bit full tooth available, so it might be possible to add a small set to an 8 TPI saw.

Another item to note is the tooth has quite a bit space one side of it, which increases the volume of chips the saw can carry. Might be part of the reason I see relatively fast rips with the current filing.
