The ECE version solves the mouth problem by having an adjustable toe - so an adjustable mouth.
How does it perform?

Hi MA; the answer is that I enjoy challenging myself.

Apart from ECE AND UlMIA you wont find many other examples of a double iron rebate plane.

Out of curiosity, what size screw did you use for the chipbreaker, & how long a slot? I'm just thinking that there is precious little room on the narrow tang of an old-style rebate blade.

MA, no idea what Stewie has in mind for his plane, but I wanted a double-iron rebate plane that could do a better job cleaning up the edges of panels, etc. than my Stanley 78. I thought about doing something like the above, but decided it was too difficult (I dips me lid to the lad for showing us it can be done!), so I started from scratch & made a small "badger" style infill instead. I also skewed the blade, for good measure. Horn modified b.jpg

In the couple of years since I made it, I've probably used it twice on a 'real' job & 3 or 4 times demonstrating it to others, not what you'd call a big return for effort. But I'm lucky that I'm in a position to be able to follow my whims, at least occasionally....

Hi Ian; I have attached photos showing the cap iron in detail. (shown left). The cap iron screw is only around a 1/4" dia. and just over 1/8" in depth. The slot length about 1".

To create the slot on such a confined area I used a Dremel with an extension bit. This was followed up with a 1/4" chisel.

To create the additional room to house the double iron the bed was worked lower at its highest point and tapered off at the back of the mouth.

To check the bed for flatness masking tape was adhered to the back 3/8" chisel and chalk applied. Any high spots show up when the chalked surface is rubbed against the bed.

Hi Tom. The rebate has been fettled in and produces wonderful ribbon shavings.

Fettling involved rounding over the profile of cap iron, and creating a liitle more room within the throat by reducing the steepness of the wear angle by around 1 degree.
