How old are these drill braces?
Wondering if anyone can help my father with these two
As an avid garage saler he came across This pair but hasn't been able to find much about them.
Any clues appreciated
PS - long time lurker and love this site, hello to all out there
No makers marks at all
Same again, nothing apart from the number 12 cast into the underside of the cap
Thank in advance, hoping someone might be able to shed some light on these
Brett

Welcome Brett.
These are too old for me to know anything about them, but our resident brace expert, borringgeoff, will be along soon, no doubt. These will be right up his alley.
The second one looks a bit tired. That spring won't be original; there appears to be a braze repair; and the nut that tightens the "chuck" is a ring-in.
The first one, on the other hand, looks to be a real beauty.

I think the first one might be called "scotch pattern" ... very nice.
and maybe the name 'Fray' gets mentioned wrt the second(?) [not 'Frey' ... that's Game of Thrones ]
Geoffff !
Cheers,
Paul

G'day Brett,
Thanks for the vote of confidence Paul and Vann.
The first one is a Scotch brace possibly British, and the second is as a Spofford pattern probably made by John Fray in the USA. Nelson Spofford patented his design in 1859 (25894) and it was made by Fray from then and later up until about the early 1940's by Stanley. The 12 on the inside of the head is the sweep of the brace. It is fairly common to find them in Australia with a wrap of No 8 wire on the handle but in your example it looks more like a spring. I wonder if they cut the handle to get the spring on then brazed it back together?
Cheers,
Geoff.
