Dronfield plane.
Does anyone on the forum have knowledge of a Dronfield No. 4 plane? A friend of mine purchased one at the local trash and treasure last Sunday for $10. There appears to be very little information on Google, apart from the fact that Dronfield in England is the location of an airfield, giving plenty of information about Dronfield and planes (as in aircraft). There are a few vague references to Dronfield wood planes at auction, but no substantial facts and figures.

I found Wood planes - Stanley Tools Limited which seems to connect Dronfield with Stanley.

I had a look at the plane today, and got a few photos, which are attached. Apart from the 'Dronfield' name, it seems to have no distinguishing marks or features. I found the patent detail also found by TobyC, but this appears to be for a quite different animal than the one we have here. There is certainly no replaceable blade feature present. It could easily be a Stanley with a different lever cap. Unfortunately, nothing esoteric to enhance the value above the $10 paid for it.

This thread randomly popped up while I was searching something totally unrelated online but as I grew up a mile from Dronfield in Derbyshire and this post wasn't from too long ago I thought I would register and reply. Add to this that my sister worked for both possible manufacturers in Dronfield and later Sheffield then as you can imagine I was interested.
I have several planes from the 60's and 70's with some being marked Stanley and the ones marked Dronfield being Marples in origin as Marples works in Dronfield did what most other companies have done over time and largely copied Stanley designs but rarely put the name Marples on them, using the place of manufacture, Dronfield instead.
Marples traded from 1950-1983 in Dronfield before becoming what we now know as Irwin Marples via the Record Ridgeway name from 1983 onwards.
Planes I have are all dark red in colour but I have no exact dates of mine as I have never asked my sister and they were passed to me only recently by my Dad.
Hope this helps a bit and fills in some info, cheers.Last edited by mattd90; 2nd June 2012 at 11:41 AM. Reason: Missed some type

Welcome Matt,
Can you post some pics of your planes, the lever cap in particular?

G'day Matt,
It seems on this forum that somebody, somewhere, will be able to come up with an answer to just about any question, and this time, you are the man on the spot! Thank you for the information. I think you have quite comprehensively given the pedigree and history of the Dronfield plane. Now I can go back to sleep.
Regards, Mike.
