I wish I could pretend that mine are that skilled, but I can't ...

The one time I saw it done, the person doing the cutting wielded the cold chisel with the sort of skill you and I might aspire to when chiselling a tenon shoulder to a line

I assume the purpose was to reduce friction particularly in green timbers as my guess would be it was a docking saw used in a timber yard or timber mill. A secondary benefit would be less mass, although I am not sure how beneficial that would be in practice.

Whatever the case is certainly looked interesting and judging by the winning bid, A$895, others thought so too. The logging saw market in the US seems particularly active.

Another one that has been for sale for quite a while.

It has the same tooth pattern as the D17 (Double Duty) saw, although the gullets look to be raked a little more. The D17 did not appear until 1917 and this saw is allegedly 1914 pre-dating the Jubilee saw released for the 75th anniversary in 1915. I am not convinced of the authenticity.

    Awesome price from Awesome saws!

Oh my...two of those planes have ward irons. Not that the planes are in fabulous shape, and one of the ward irons looks to have been belt sanded or ground, probably to clean off rust.

I guess that's part of the artistic process. Interesting that whatever they did to these planes (sanding, planing?), the eyes are mostly gone from the coffin smoother. Interesting original patch at the corner of one of the long planes, too.

(I comb through beater planes because they sometimes have nearly unused iron sets, but I see a lot more stuff like this where it's not worth trying to get the irons - etsy is the king of expensive funky lamps made of planes).

I don't know how many those people sell, but there are tons of them, from the stand up triples to the dachshund style continental smoothers.

You could add a flap of canvas and it would all be plane sailing.
