This is probably not the thread to perpetuate the merits of used files, but a friend drew my attention to a thread on The Practical Machinist forum that discussed tools made from files at great length. Of course as with anything you have sift through but this link takes you to the third page of discussions and my mate pointed me in the direction of post #57.

Tools made from files... - Page 3

There was nothing conclusive about the composition of files and indeed it may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and era to era. We are all aware of how difficult it is to obtain good saw files for example.

My more knowledgeable mate also gave me this link to files which may be of interest. Just be aware it is by the file manufacturer Nicholson. However, I think they were one of the largest ever and in their day most revered.

I certainly had not visited all the links. Planes and their various attributes are not a forte of mine and while I appreciate both the sculptural lines and the craftsmanship, which are both something to behold, the mouth seems to be a little larger than ideal.

I totally agree. The rear handle in particular could benefit from a little "development." Could that be a candidate for a little bit of infil? Do you have any slithers of Gidgee to hand?

I personally see only a poor Anorexia nervosa plane, poor thing,
This is what our modern society has become.

Fat stuffed infills are no longer needed [emoji17].

Ian,Paul have either of you considered writing for galleries?[emoji6]

Are you being euphemistic about the writing abilities or just cynical?

Besides which, in my case, do you wish me to starve to death?

An entirely inappropriate comment on my part. I retract all aspects relating to "cynical" and apologise most humbly. I think a couple of stressful days at work have clouded my ability to interpret .

Could you recommend a few galleries (for Ian)?

    It is amazing Ian.

I think I can see a few other uses .

Is it also a bottle opener , the mouth reminds me of one. Or a shoe horn as well ?

Hmmm now you mention it, 'bottle opener' would be a very good suggestion! A bit more elaborate than the ones you see that look like miniature wooden planes, so it hadn't occurred to me that someone would go to all that trouble for a bottle-opener.

But then, I know people who spend ridiculous hours making infill planes, when there are legions of Stanleys, Records, et cetera, that will do the job...

    Cheers,
    IW

I am curious as old files are a possibly good source of blades. I thought they had always been, but your comment creates some doubt.
    Hi Derek
from a Nicholson publication https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....1h0ZOhlOXL.pdfForming teeth: The teeth are formed by a rapidly reciprocating chisel that strikes successive blows on the file. The hardened chisel cuts into the soft blank displacing and raising the steel into the desired tooth structure.

Hardening: The file is then hardened by heating it in a molten bath to a predetermined temperature. This is followed by immersing the file in a quenching solution. This combination of heating and cooling under carefully controlled conditions brings the file to the maximum hardness to the very top of the cutting edges.

A couple of nice eggbeaters on Trademe - Hand Drills | Trade Me

Maybe the left hand one is for spade bits...

...which is more than the right hand one can manage.

Perhaps the drill on the left is part of an interchangeable garden set. Did the full set include a fork and a shovel?
