Chief, I'd guess it's for curving the blade - seems to be in the right position.
You're right, it's ok for a home-made job, but asking $400 as a 'buy it now' price seems a bit ambitious to me. I reckon you could knock up something as good or better for less than $20.
However, eventual selling prices have quite often defied our collective wisdom...
Cheers,IW

Looking at the other items he has for sale, he has *lofty* aspirations. $300 starting bid for a Stanley 4 1/2.

That Stanley 4 1/2 has a repaired cracked cheek, worn out blade, and stained hardwood handles. A bargain!

well it is the 'C' version so it "must" be worth a bit more than the usual run-of-the-mill #4-1/2, but still Patrick listed a 1950s model #4-1/2C for USD $135 just a few days ago.

as you say Derek "a bargain!"regards from Alberta, Canada

This one threw me into overdrive:
Simonds No.342.png
A Simonds No.342 gauge for setting up crosscut logging saws. Ok it looks a bit better than average and it comes with the box and instructions but,
.
To be fair it did include free postage.
I started some research to find the prices of similar tools, which I did and they were around $30. Then I checked back on the first listing to see a price revision.

A typo I think.

I know for certain that 'itsalovelydayforshopping' are drop shippers. They list stuff that they can buy from local stores, lots from Bunnings, add their mark up, ebay and paypal fees and postage and you end up with prices like the items you've linked to. Caveat emptor!

Hmmm... this “vintage wooden plane” appears to be missing the iron. And cap iron. And wedge. And the funny shaped hole to stick them all in.

At $25 (+ P&P) it’s a little on the expensive side; perhaps the seller was a little plastered when he posted the ad .Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Chief
I think that one could be floated on the stock exchange.

Seriously?
A few days ago someone put in an advert to sell 3 “wooden moulding planes”. The descriptions were somewhat ordinary as the seller clearly knows little about them and the pictures appear to be photos of photos. What stood out though was the unbelievable asking price... $3900!!! I didn’t post this as I made an assumption that the seller simply suffered from Misplaced Comma Syndrome.
I suspect that someone may have contacted the seller and suggested that the listed price may have been slightly beyond-Jupiter-out-of-this-world as this morning they have been relisted:
