I'd love a patternmakers vise but sadly they are always big$$ I think that the Turtle back is the better looking type, however the K1 etc are more functional as they have unlimited locking position as opposed to the turtles which are restricted.

The Emmert Improved models sell over $1k USD regularly. The Emmert also come in 18" and other sizes the Taiwanese version is only 13" long.

I personally would give a second hand Taiwanese one a try if I could get it cheap as that would be my most likely way of getting one. I dream of owning an original just for sentimentality, I like historic tools and equipment.

Me too. I just like to "keep it real" occasionally. People pay some mighty prices for a worn and repaired original when they could (if they just wanted the use of the tool) buy a reproduction for a lot less. In the case of the Emmert repro the quality may not be as good but often a new LN plane will be cheaper than an original 'rare' Stanley.

That said, a while back, I was shown an Emmert vise by the retired patternmaker who had used the vise all his working life and it was a very cool experience.

    Yep I fully agree.
I think in the current environment there are a lot of tools priced on Hype and Bragging rights.

Not just the current environment, Dale. 'Twas ever thus.

And it extends to more than tools......

I didn't think that the price was excessively high for what the item is , and I think that it could possibly have gone higher if the seller had not placed the ebay listing at a time when every body is away from their computers on holiday and getting over the Christmas spending frenzy .
Yes it is a high price compared to the new clones.

A search of this forum turned up two that sold here. Not exactly the same, but original pattern makers vises.

    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f221/e...s-vice-127808/

And a post on the Emmert clone

    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/tr...e-clone-16959/

I was searching all over the place for the new clone and had given up and decided that no one made them any more , until I read the reply's here. I wonder how much it would cost to ship to here ? Now that shipping cost would be shocking!! I would like to consider fitting one to a bench .

As shipping would be expensive, and Taiwan is closer I emailed the manufacturer but have had no response over the last few days. There is lots of machinery on their website but the vise isn't shown. Maybe they are no longer in production and old stock is being sold off only in the US?

    Hi Dale,

Nice vise, and it's one of those things that would last a lifetime.

If they did sell to other customers apart from their US client , they would only be interested in selling them in numbers , eg a pallet of 10 or 20 ? Im just guessing . That number would be nice to know though.

Just to be a bit more clear on the restriction . I'm not 100% clear in my understanding of the differences between the Turtle and the K1 .

I think the difference between the Turtle and the K1 is that they both spin 360 degrees , that's with the jaws set at the normal vertical bench vise position
[ possibly depending on how its fitted to the bench front]
, right through to when the vise pivots up to the horizontal jaw position.

The Turtle has 8 holes for a spring loaded rod to engage every 45 degrees though , so can only lock at any of those 8 positions.

And the K1 can lock anywhere in the 360 degrees .

I think all the other features are the same , the pivot from vertical to horizontal , and the taper adjustment of 5 degrees.

Yes, I thought that Lee Valley made (or stocked someone else's) patternmaker's vices until a year or two ago. IIRC they were in the region of $US1500 each

Yep that is my understanding also.

The Tucker Vise was made by veritas up until a few years ago (2009) and was an alloy version with supposed improvements in strength and on the design. Nut I thought it was only $499 not $1500
