You know I think we're dealing with an infant prodigy.
Leaving aside the fact that if I were refering to my "daddy's grandfather" the tool would have had to be purchased before the company making it was founded (which was in 1919), the box is in remarkable condition.
Looking at the time line provided on the Great Neck company's web site requires that "daddy's grandfather" purchased the plane after 1971!regards from Alberta, Canada

Most folks know of my interest in Turner planes, and so when one comes along I like to follow its fortunes.
This possibly lovely Number 6 appeared about a week ago and I bookmarked it.
Now not that long ago, about $100-$120 would have been a winning bid on this, but not today.
There have been a few bidding wars on Ebay of late. Maybe the big lottery winners are putting their hands up.
Congratulations to the winning bidder.

I thought you might have designs on that on Tom.
I scratched it from the watch list last night.. thinking $150 tops... looks like I was wrong!
It's good to see some Ausy planes becoming more desireable.. stands to reason it would be the turners to kick it all off, they are harder to find than Falcons, Carters etc and they have those lovely handles like the super exxy Millers Falls planes. They were also (from what I have seen) consistantly well made.. I have yet to see a dodgy casting or any of the little flaws you'd see on most others from time to time.
Looks like you got your collection under way just in time
Speaking of which.. what is it missing now? last time I asked you were down to a 220 and a 7 I think?Best regards, Luban

Turner 6 with box
It wasnt me this time but I led the pack for a while.
I've got my pristine 4 with box and another "roughie" I am more than happy using - a little bit of camber on the original blade and it is sweet as.
But an OT question - what should I use to glue the label back on the box for my 4

Thanks Luban.
Watching this auction brought back all those memories of the 220 I was watching some time back. It sat on $28 for days and I thought it would go for about $40-$50 tops.
I think the final bid was $142.
Yes I am still after a 220 and a nice number 7 base. I have only ever seen the one 220 and a couple of sevens.
My number seven body is a resurrected roughie, that was let go to rack and ruin by someone, and still carries the scars. It is functional but not pretty.
Peter McBride owns the nicest number 7 I have seen but he won't part with it.(yes I have asked)
I really like my Turners and I agree with you that they are well finished. Their quality control must have been quite something.
Thanks again for the thought.
Cheers

My 7 should come up pristine when I get a chance to put a couple of hours into it - maybe next week, I have collected a brand new blade and a selection of like new totes, knobs and frogs for it from a school scrap store - thanks Harlan The base is in excellent condition but needs a strip and repaint.
I was hoping to grab the 6 for my birthday present, seems $167 was not going to cut it; not really worried as it is over twice as much as I paid for my seven which was twice as much as all my others. Half the fun is finding one at a reasonable price tucked away somewhere Still chasing a 6 and the elusive 220 to finish the set (all users).

I remember the cries of injustice shortly afterward
That's the tragic thing about evbay.. after 5 days with a particular plane on your watch list you can convince yourself it's yours.. damn, I have even made a space on my tool shelf for a new toy only to get pinged at the last minute!
Still.. it's all good fun, just like real life auctions if it wasn't fun I wouldn't bother.
Back to the Turners.. which in your opinion are the harder to come by sizes?.. obviously the 7 and 220.. then maybe the 5 1/2 and 4 1/2 ??
I have only seen 4's and 5's in the wild.. one 4 1/2.Best regards, Luban

Well of all of them I think that the 220 is the rarest, and in my experience the 5 1/2 would come a close second, followed by the 6. I have seen more 4 1/2's than 6's.
You are right about auctions including Ebay - they are exciting as long as you know your limit before you start, and stick to it.
Markets on the other hand always hold the hope of the unexpected and are just plain fun.
Cheers

Trademe won't let you sell people.
For those that missed it, there was a picture of a man on an auction for 'A useless tool'. When I checked, bidding had reached 50 cents. We don't know how lucky we are......
