    Ooch. Tell me more?!?

I've found airmail can be half the cost of the plane you're buying, and surface mail can be 25%. I prefer to spend my scarce tool dollars on tools, not postage (yeah, I know I'm a tight-a%#e )

I don't think we can send surface mail from New Zealand anymore, but we can still receive. I had a purchase from Lee Valley arrive via surface mail last week (after 9 weeks on the high seas), and I have one coming from UK, due any day now. Is it the US or Aussie end that's blocking surface mail? My one and only LN purchase was sent to a US address ($US6.00 p&p ) and then collected by my BIL on a visit.

    Cheers, Vann.

Nope, def not a stanley, looks like a dopey hybrid of a 101 and a 130 to me

Judging by the price it's at though someone knows something about it. (And they mustn't think it's dopey at all) Must be quite the collectors item. Anyone know anything about them?

He says in the title "Stanley Type" And in the description: "similar in construction to a Stanley 101 Block Plane or a Stanley 101 & 1/2 Bull Nose Block Plane. At first glance without the different marks you would think it is an old Stanley Block Plane, it has that look about it. Maybe a Sargent, Millers Falls or Preston Plane??

So he knows it isn't a Stanley.

    Peter
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

It has a British Patent Office Registry Mark on the front. Used between 1842 & 1883.
    British Registry Mark
Decoding is a bit of a challenge!
Pretty certain it is a Preston Duplex Block Plane #1358...in particularly nice condition for about 130+ year old.
Interesting to get the Stanley books out and look when duplex planes were first made...and see who made a dopey hybrid copy first...just looked....1884 first edition of the #130 Stanley...game set and match to Preston!

    Peter

    Default ooops

I didn't phrase that very well. I could see he wasn't saying it was a stanley, and you're right Peter, it was a well worded description( unlike my post ).
I just wasn't sure if Stanley made a range called "Duplex" that had dual purposes that I hadn't heard of.

    TT,
you might think he has made a grave error in the description....but these were selling a few years ago as US Civil war relics...used to clear the fuses or primers from cannons. And getting more than US$100.00 each!!!
I know one very happy dealer in Upstate NY who sold a few that way!
    Here are the real ones...
    Vent gimlets

    Regards,
    Peter

That's great, some corkscrew collector is going to see them and think they're extremely unusual and interesting.... and drill a hole in his next bottle of plonk

    Definately a good ebay dropping.
Seller could be forgiven for the description I reckon.

Wow! they could easily be confused. If I wasn't a nice guy I'd cut a few of mine down and put them up

I think the description on this auction is just maybe misinformed (not sneaky).
After looking at the link to the civil war relics, I believe you would have to be very careful when buying one of those gimlets as a fuse/primer cleaner. A couple of those tools are indistinguishable from woodworking gimlets.

    Default An odd unusual vice...

    Odd indeed.
ODD OLD VINTAGE TRIPAX 102 VICE VISE TOOL CLAMP NICE GC - eBay, Vices, Clamps, Tools, Hardware, Locks, Collectables. (end time 27-Nov-09 22:30:48 AEDST)

You'd think that those with no idea would at least have the common decency to start the item at $0.99.

    Cheerio,
    Virg.

Yeah, you're not wrong Virgil- I'm not sure if it'll pull a tenner anyway though

I've been looking for an engineer's vice with a sight on it for a while, but usually they're cheaper.
