Just a guess John, but I think the brass is reinforcing, to make sure the body stays together. It looks odd to me, too, I would expect if someone went to the trouble of adding a brass side, they'd put it on the wear side. P'raps they had no way of cutting out the escapement neatly. Not the foggiest idea of what the wood is, it's certainly not Beech, as you might expect in that part of the world. That's a novel blade-retaining mechanism, too -looks like a recipe for a bit of blade chatter!

I reckon the asking price is a wee bit hopeful, but then look at what happened to the amputee 78!

    Cheers,
    IW

Some people are very optimistic. Usually a woodie in reasonable condition might sell for $10-$15 over here (on a good day). This seller wants $120.00 . Shame about the missing cutting iron, missing cap iron, missing wedge - and all the borer holes...

Some years ago I scored a GTL plane and on reading up on them I found out they made kits of tools for the home handyman. I had always wanted to see one of the kits.

    ....

Price seems very fair for the whole package:
    • Woodie plane - $10, plus
    • 150 worms @ $1 each = $150, gives
    • Total price = $160.

Ebay mates rates special; $120. Very reasonable.

For instance, a spokeshave, but no plane (I would've thought a plane would be more useful fixing things about the house), and a soldering iron (I guess lots of people had gas hobs for heating them), which is a bit of a tiddler, you wouldn't be doing any plumbing repairs with that size iron.

    Definitely one for the collector...

If you flick through all the pcs there are 2 planes in the bottom compartment.
On this second look I am thinking the hammer and pliers are not original. I would have expected a claw hammer and plastic handled pliers look too modern.

I'm tending to agree -- though a claw hammer would (should?) be easy to source which makes the ball-pane hammer a possible original item.
The spoke shave may also be a "replacement". I would expect an original shave to have the GTL decal.

Oh yeah! I originally pressed the wrong arrow & thought there were only 4 pics.

I did think the box/chest/case looked rather deep for just that top lot. That makes a difference! Maybe not the best tools Sheffield had to offer, but you could at least attempt to make something with that lot. A bigger chest to fit more tools, for starters......

Certainly doesn't look heavily used. Looks like more time was spent contemplating the job judging by the chewed end of the pencil.

Or that was the only time the hammer was used...

This guy has got to be on drugs....

He has a “make an offer” facility; I would suggest a reasonable offer would simply involve knocking off one of the zeroes...

    Chief

That raises a few issues to my mind.

There have always been people who overestimate the value of their goods. That maybe through ignorance or it may be to rope in a sucker. However, I feel in these disease troubled times there is another aspect and it is that people are hoping to raise some extra much needed cash. Originally I thought the virus would see prices coming down, but i have to say I have not seen evidence of that: In fact to the contrary. Perhaps the explanation is that there is one group of people attempting to raise money to live and there is another group that are sitting at home doing stuff all except indulging in retail therapy.

When I see a ridiculous price on goods I tend to look at what else that seller has for sale as it is sometimes, but not always, an indicator as to the type of seller. In this instance it looks like somebody who has no expertise at all in hand tools. He/She has probably seen a plane or two for sale and said to themselves. Here, I've got some of those. I'll make a killing on this, not realising that there is a vast difference between a car with a motor and a car without, to use an analogy. After about three months of no interest they too lose interest.

Always, a bit sad for many potential reasons, but the plus side is that it gives us something to talk about.
