I think Ian's comment is the one to follow.
With antique tools, unknown provenance and only casual acquaintance of the industry by the sellers it would be exceedingly difficult to prove deliberate intent to mislead. I am completely unfamiliar with hand planes and if it looked good or old you could sell anything to me if I was in the market. Hand saws would be a different kettle of fish as I have access to good resources. However, I frequently see things that are not quite kosher: Most of these aberrations are due to ignorance more than deception.
An example is this Simonds saw recently offered for sale. I was immediately attracted to the Crescent Moon and Star logo, which Simonds only used between 1900 and 1904 (changed the logo for 1905) and the handle. Not only does the handle have that delightful double cove on the lower guard ( first used by Disston on their No.12) it has an exceptionally well executed wheat pattern that speaks of hand carving.

However, all is not quite right. The etch says it is a No.8 and the number eight had a different saw screw pattern and no wheat carving. It may be that the handle is not a Simonds. Under the handle I would expect to see extra holes. Somebody snapped this saw up: I hope they were not too disappointed after a closer examination.

That style of handle was used only on the No.4½ and the No.5 (A similar handle was used on the No.61 but was let further into the saw plate without being "close up."). The saw was described as 24", but it is a 20" panel saw.

The item itself seems ok - a Lie Nielsen 4 1/2, description and photos all are fine. But the sale price is what got me. USD420.98 - AUD566.37 and if it was an Aussie buyer, add another AUD140 for shipping and import duties. So AUD700ish for a used LN 4 1/2. A new one is AUD619+shipping and if you live in the US, its USD320.
Just... why would you when you can get a brand new one for less?

well ...
you really really want one in time for Christmas -- as of just now, L-N's web site is showing the #4-1/2 as out of stock.
Still makes it difficult to justify paying a USD $96 premium over buying a new plane
the Cocobolo handle option is no longer offered. When they were available they were an additional USD $25 (?). Brings the premium over new down to USD $71.
the buyer let themselves get carried away?? The bidding history suggests that the plane appreciated by USD $81 over a 2 minute period.
?? Just another example of the "heirloom" value embedded in L-N planes ??regards from Alberta, Canada

I don't own a LN plane (yet) but I didn't think not working was much of an issue with them!
Actually a good point, maybe they had to have that cocobolo to match their other cocobolo-y tools.
Quite frankly, I'm more annoyed this never happens on the things I've put on ebay! Maybe I've just got some seller's envy.

It's a #3 that the seller describes as being in excellent condition.

This guy’s got aspirations...
Vintage Plane | eBay
It’s a home made scraper plane; looks like it may have been done with a fair bit of care and attention to detail; I’d be interested in knowing the function of the rear adjusting screw. But $300? Dreaming...Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.
