Another "Rare" Stanley plane...
Maybe Ebay should ban the use of the word "Rare" in listings...
This one should be 'weird' rather than 'rare' - it looks like it was put together from spares from a radio club meeting.
And it looks like it doesn't have a blade? Unless its one of those odd ones with replaceable blades?
"Rarely, and I do mean rarely, you might find an bench plane with a strange iron in it. It looks as if someone screwed a razor blade onto the cutting edge of the normal iron. If you see this, sell the iron to a collector, and find yourself a replacement. What you have is another one of Stanley's boneheaded ideas - "Ready Edge Blades." This was Stanley's attempt to make the life of the workman easier. Whenever the plane's cutter dulled, he could pull out a new one and screw it onto the holder. This dreadful idea came in 1 3/4", 2", and 2 3/8" widths, and, fortunately, only lasted a short time during the late-1920's to the early 1930's.
" From Blood and Gore
But it doesn't look like a 20's plane.Cheers, Richard

I seem to remember these being sold in the uk in the late 70s early 80s. Didn't know anyone who bought one though.

They were diabolical. The replacement blades chattered like demented monkies, and there was no bevel on them.More like a skinny boxcutter blade.
All plastic.Yuk!

I found this one interesting, LEE CHAMFER PLANE PART..RAREST ON EBAY.... - eBay Carpentry, Woodworking, Tools, Tools, Hardware Locks, Collectibles. (end time 07-Mar-10 06:47:13 AEDST)
I haven't done the research to find out if this is a joke, but with a feedback rating of 1740@100% I would guess not.

It looks like the seller has only listed part of the fence from the plane, which is very strange.
a bit of a search suggests that the whole plane, in good condition, might fetch about USD $20,000 -- (Brown Auction Catalogue result from April 05 was USD$17,325).
There's a picture on page 61 of Sandor Nagyszalanczy's The Art of Fine Tools (Taunton)
This link to the page might work
The Art of Fine Tools - Google Books
one day I'll tech myself how to do a tiny URL -- oh good, theb software made it tiny automaticly
this one
which has a replacement handle and the odd foreign screw was auctioned in August last year fetched USD $7,750regards from Alberta, Canada

Anyone who thinks they can dismiss knowledge about tools, and laugh at what they know nothing about...look here...
$25.00 it what it cost at Camberwell market...$100 is what I paid!

and look at the only other one that has EVER been found...
Martin J. Donnelly Antique Tools: Tool List No. 1018
Non original frog and blade....and it went for more than US$8000.00
ignorance is bliss...
Hope I get chance to buy a tool or two from one of the comedians around here

Clowns
Peter,
As you know the bloke selling that plane is one of the leading dealers in the 'states.
Met Donelly also at a tool do in Springfield Miss. in '83 he had a early notebook computer back then to manage his stuff.
Look on Hans site if he wasn't fair dinkum do you think Hans would have him selling stuff in his classifieds.
Interesting to say the least wot some of these 'experts' come up with.
Leaves the door open for those with a few clues to scoop up some amazing finds.
He has a 3 inch slick in his other stuff on ebay currently, there was a guy on the hand tools part of this forum after one if someone can hook them up.
As the great man once said 'he who dies with the most tools wins'.
Did he really win?
Who cares?

Peter
I'm still curious how the major parts of a plane like this might get separated.
missplaced screws and blades I sort of understand, but half a plane?
do you have any thoughts?regards from Alberta, Canada
