Interesting Saw On eBay - Simonds
Simonds Hand Saw 9 TPI.
I thought the brass supporting the weakest part of the tote was a terrific idea and certainly adds to the visual appeal of the saw.
Anyone know much about this manufacturer?
Craig
Two of the better pics FYI.

Strange, I happened to see this on eBay this morning and saved it a few hours before your post .

Thanks!
Rob,
That is tempting, but I am going to have to hold off. I thought the addition of the brass was an attractive and functional way to reinforce the traditional weakspot on wooden saw handles. I had never seen that before.

Rob,
there was a Harvey W. Peace saw with the brass plate on what they called a "Perfection Saw"
Patented July 3 1883,
https://www.google.com/patents/US280...ed=0CEEQ6AEwAQ
an example sold recently for LOTS of $s
Harvey w Peace Brooklyn NY Backsaw Patent 1883 Bright 12" Back Saw Old Vtg Tool | eBay
The joke is that they actually weakened the handle with the screw, so very few are found without a broken handle....so good unbroken ones are very collectible.
I have a reprint of the Peace catalogue, I think I have a Simonds one ...somewhere....but I cant find it...
Somewhere I think I did see a Simonds saw with a guard like that one, but I'm thinking user made on that one.
Peter

Impressed
Peter,
I wasn't too sure if it was or wasn't. The slight flare where the brass guard meets the heel of the sawblade made me think it was part of the original saw, or an option that was available at the time from the company. Either way, it's a good look.
Thanks for including those links. The patent was informative. The Harvey W Peace backsaw was interesting, although the brass looks too thin to do much to reinforce the handle. Mind you, those guys knew more about sawmaking and wood properties than I'll ever know

Well this is a real how-de-doo!
I assumed just now reading the title that I knew exactly what you were referring to ... wrooong!
I wonder if there has been an auction that is now flowing online ... I haven't seen the 8A with this reinforcement before recent weeks ... and now three nice examples!
SecondChanceSawWorks had me salivating and consulting the penny-god with this offering. Hand Sharpend 26" Simonds No 8A Straight Back Handsaw 8 PPI Cross Cut 1915 20 | eBay
I'm very keen on Simonds saws and I hadn't seen one before ... I was assuming it was user-added ... but just couldn't stretch to that price, and tried an unsuccessful offer.
Now I see there are two more ... (!) ... (not from a saw-doctor)
Simonds Mfg Co Antique Hand Saw 26" with Wood Handle Brass Hardware No 8A | eBay
and the one above.
Obviously this *was* factory made.
The Harvey-Peace 'protector' was not lipped like that one ... (I've seen the same on one S&J also) ... but are not exactly uncommon (in the US) ... I have six which you can see here ... https://plus.google.com/photos/10355...857?banner=pwa
Thanks for pointing in out.
Cheers,
Paul

Simonds
The wkFineTools site has some *awesome* information.
Simonds Co history ... Simonds Manufacturing Company - Fitchburg, MA
Simonds wound up, all done by 1928ish ... but at one point sold more saws than Disston.
I had to get this sorted out in my head ... it seems they had an early model line-up ... and then a later one.
I hadn't seen this before online but Toby gave a link to a woodnet? discussion on the sharpening info possibly from this booklet.
It is from 1911 and you see the models are numbered 4, 4-1/2, ...
Simonds Manufacturing Company - Fitchburg, MA
If you see the saw I won (from above) the etch looks like ...
Early Simonds 8A etch.jpg
The 1923 shows a more familiar range (to me) ... 61, 62, 71, 72, 361, 362, 371, 372 ..
http://www.wkfinetools.com/hus-saws/...g-HandSaws.pdf
and a much more common 'modern' etch like this one ... The Simonds Mfg. Co.# - The "Crescent Moon" Saw

All very interesting
