I note now that Simonds only got in the handsaw game 1901. Atkins must be similar.

But ... companies eaten up by Henry Disston ... (http://www.disstonianinstitute.com/acquisitions.html)

I regularly use an Atkins crosscut. The only difference between it and my Disston is that the Disston looks more elegant.

Yes - I thought it would sit better in its own thread, then squeeze onto your thread.

I have an EC Atkins question.

What was the Damaskeen finish? It sounds as though it is a surface treatment as I recently saw a reference to a saw where they pointed out that the damaskeen finish had gone. Is it like a chrome or an anti friction treatment?

Thanks for the prod ... it's good to investigate. It was offered as an alternative to a mirror finish ... and there are more references to it than just saws ... clock-making for example.

    Here's a ref ... http://higherlogicdownload.s3.amazon...2004%20web.pdf
"The “Frederick Atherton” was one of two grades of a full-plate 1866 watch design of the United States Watch Co. of Marion,
New Jersey. The butterfly shaped cutout in the back plate was
to allow observation of the pallet action without removing the
dial. The watch featured a double-sunk dial, button setting, and
stem winding. It was the first mass produced watch in the U. S.
with these features. This company also introduced nickel
plates and damaskeening to this country. The history of the U. S. Watch Co. is described in
Marion by Muir and Kraus. "

    Here's an ad from the Indianapolis (Polk's) city directory 1908 ... https://archive.org/details/polksindianapoli1908unse
    Indianapolis city diry 1908 p1608 Polk.JPG

and a REALLY great link I'd seen before and forgotten ... http://www.timberframe-tools.com/tools/saw-atkins-53/

and references the patent ... http://www.timberframe-tools.com/wp-...-damaskeen.pdf

    This says http://swingleydev.com/archive/get.p...ubmit_thread=1
"So it's a finish only. It's a simple low amplitude wavy pattern parallel to the cutting edge. "
which does remind me of something I've seen on watches/clocks/etc.

At first I thought of this ref ... but it's a bit different ... http://www.wkfinetools.com/hus-saws/...elAndSaws1.asp
