it surely is
i try as much as possible to support local stockists... f'instance, i want to buy a pair of veritas beam heads - $14 a pair from lee valley; $22 a pair from carba-tec
add shipping, lee valley turns into $20 a pair... and the $2 i think is worth it to keep a local supplier running

I sent an email to Faithful regarding where their planes are made, this was there reply:
Dear Mr, Gibson.
Faithfull tools like most other tool companies use global sourcing and the factory that produces our range of planes is situated in India. This factory produces all our woodworking planes and has been a supplier to us since this range was introduced in 2001, this factory is regularly visited by our product director and uses the most modern production techniques and equipment. Our supplier produces planes from raw material with casting and finishing being carried out on one site to help ensure consistent quality .
I must say they look good for the price, i'd be interested to so some reviews from members

Got my Faithfull catalog in the mail today, they sell a lot of stuff. They're free from Faithfull Tools - Over 3,300 Tools For All Trades.
Or you can just look at it online, but I like a real catalog.

the planes arrived, but i have not had time to do anything with them until last weekend
they are of reasonable quality
the sole flattened quite quickly; there remains a very slight depression behind the mouth that will lap out when i get back to it
the adjustable nose is square and flat
the mouth is square
the blade had an accurate bevel from out of the box and took an edge readily
probably the worst bit is the paint on the body and the cap iron; it's so thick it could almost be powdercoat - and it's far from flat on frog and the back of the cap iron, both of which need to have it virtually completely removed in order to have the blade sit correctly
verdict? if i could afford better ones, i'd buy them; but nor do i feel i've wasted my $80...

I note that axminster tools in the UK sell a range of planes which look to be clones of Stanley and Record. No idea of quality but prices well below originals, and many that are not made any more by said manufacturers.
My father purchased an Indian made no 4 plane from his local tool store. It was the worst bit of gear I've ever seen. Nothing was square, the blade adjustment mechanism was abysmal and the plane iron was soft and wouldn't take an edge. Only paid $30-40 but might as well just torn his money up and saved the trip to the store
