Thread: Falcon Pope hand planes - underappreciated?

Further to my post of the other day re die cast frogs in 2 3/8” size.
I went to the TTTG members and friends tool sale this morning and Fred one of the sellers had a frog for a 4 1/2, 5 1/2 ,6 or 7 on his table.
The pictures are below and as marked on the lateral lever it’s a pot metal Turner.
So I guess we can surmise that Pope did both sizes when they made the dies and Turner continued with them.
Question remaining, did Stanley keep producing both or just the 2”?

No, I bought one some time back from a forum member as a "fixer upper" to use.

I will admit, I haven't gotten around to the "fix" part yet!

I have a couple of my fathers Falcon F5 planes and would like to restore them. The lever caps on both are branded Turner? Would this be original or has he modified them? They just need a clean up and the totes repaired or sourced.

Not really.
The Falcons had their own lever cap so these were likely added later.
I wouldn't worry about it though.
My own Falcon number 5 is a bit of a frankenplane.
Titan Blade and early Stanley keyhole lever cap.
The handles aren't original either

Turners bought out/took over Pope, so it's just possible that these planes were made during the transition from Pope to Turner - but more likely he has replaced the lever caps for some reason.

But these are your father's planes, and the caps are now part of the combined history of your father and the planes. No need to change them out, they will not effect the function.

If anything, Turner was upmarket in comparison with Pope. HTH.

Looking forward to starting on them I have 4 to do.

Totes broken and the top missing also the little screws so will have a go at grafting some wood in in preference to replacing them.

opps last one is still a plane..........

You'll get them going alright. those red acrylic handles are kind of groovy.
though you may have some trouble getting a shaving with that last one.

Those Turners, with their red handles, are quite cool . One weakness though, is the die-cast frog. I believe it was Pope who changed the frog material toward the end of their plane manufacturing.

I have a Turner 5 1/2 in great condition - I don't use it. When the time comes that I want to use it I may change out the frog for a cast-iron one.
