Thread: Feedback on Narex Chisels

I bought a pair of 12mm/1/2" Narex skews for wood carving. Scrubbed them down from 25 degrees to 20.
They are my go-to pair for form-line carving (everything fairly narrow V-groove). Carving sharp, they stand up to maybe an hour's work before honing. Pfeil wood carving gouges are good for 30-40 minutes at most.
A week later, I bought a second pair of Narex to turn into other wood carving tool shapes. Not the least bit disappointed.

Thank you Robson Valley. It sounds like the skews are pretty good quality for price. I am looking at Narex Classic Bevel Edge chisels . Thy will be used for cutting dovetails etc, mainly in softwoods. Can the handles on these take a bit of punishment?. Can you get replacement handles? Cheers Ross

I purchased a set of narex mortise chisels 2 year ago. I use then on a regular basis and cant fault them.

I have a fill set of bevel edged chisels and a full set of mortising chisels.
1. They cost next to nothing to buy
2. The handles look like fossilize dung
3. The backs come so close to flat that they are very quickly made so.
4. They are easy to sharpen and hold an edge just fine.
5. If you use them and something unpleasant is the result it was not the fault of the chisel. They work as you would like a chisel to do. The Mortise chisels are slightly trapezoid in shape and tapered top to bottom so they do not jam in the hole. The are thick and strong. The angle that they are initially ground at is (in my opinion) to shallow for a mortise chisel but that is easily remedied. The bevel edged chisels are narrow enough on the sides to get into the corners of dovetails.

Would I buy a set of LN's? Yes if you were paying.
Am I looking for something else? No. They are excellent chisels and do me fine.
Would I buy them again? If I got home and found them stolen I would go out and get them all over again.

Considering the cost and the quality I cannot think of anything that comes close.

We put 64 new Narex chisels into our senior woodwork room at the beginning of this year. No complaints from the teachers or students.

I like the dark handled ones for some reason.

Yeah matey. Have a good look at what other tools you might like from their site so as you can get a bit of value from the shipping costs. I know a few things I have got from them are almost half the price of that charged by an Australian distributor. cheers Ross
